Glad you asked! They're extremely rare variations of pokemon with different color pallets. There's about a 1/8000 chance of encountering them in the wild randomly without any RNG manipulation or methods that increase your chance of encountering one, so it isn't uncommon for some players to have never seen one before despite having played one or more games.

The most common methods are the Masuda Method, Shiny Fishing, and PokeRadar Chaining, however there seems to be a higher chance of finding shinies in the Friend Safari as well. The three aforementioned methods are covered in the guides section in OP.
>What's the Masuda Method?
Named after Junichi Masuda, one of Diamond/Pearl's developers, programmed a little something special into the games that increases the shiny rate when breeding under certain conditions. Simply, a pokemon traded from a foreign country should be breeded with a pokemon from your cartridge. This increases the rate of an egg containing a shiny by 4x in DPPt (1/2048), and 5x in prior games (1/1638). See the guide in OP for more details.
>What's a shiny charm?
A key item in Gen V that increases your chances of finding a shiny. 1/2730 in the wild, and 1/1024 when using the Masuda Method. It cannot be traded through games.
>Is the shiny rate higher in the Friend Safari?
The majority of /vp/ thinks that this is true, but there hasn't been a datamine of the X/Y ROMs so nobody can say for sure. The rate appears to be on par with the Masuda Method's probability of 1/1638. It should be noted that you aren't allowed to use the Pokeradar in the friend safari, so chaining isn't an option there.

See the GFShinyGuide link in OP. While far easier to find and catch than with the other methods, the pool of available pokemon attainable from fishing is small, and because they much easier to catch, they aren't valued as high as other non-fishable shiny pokemon. Don't fret, you can usually throw a fishing shiny up on the GTS and get most any non-shiny pokemon for it including legendaries if some poor shmuck who doesn't know their worth falls for it. No hard shiny to normal fish ratios yet, but a rough estimate brings it around 1/200 at maximum probability. It should be noted that the mechanics of shiny fishing aren't entirely understood
>What is chaining?
When using the Pokeradar under extremely certain circumstances, one can increase their probability of encountering a shiny in grass patches. This is the more tricky method of the three, as it requires that you follow certain rules in order not to break your "chain" or "streak". The higher your chain, the more likely it is that you'll encounter a shiny. It should be noted that you cannot use the Pokeradar in the friend safari, but this is made up for by the (supposedly) higher shiny rates in the safari. See the guide in OP for more details.

shiny Pokemon are still the biggest waste of time ever. Like… Fanart is one thing, but in game? The odds are so unbelievably stacked against you, for literally no benefit. It’s not even bragging material! It’s not like you sank hundreds of hours into your MMO or even a shooter, leveling and unlocking or sharpening your in-game abilities. Or spent hundreds of hours honing your reflexes. You either held left and right, or played a shit tier grid based minigame for days. Right, I'm gonna offer my Eevee in this thread, because the other thread is terrible and this is the only time I'll do it. Shiny Eevee w/Anticipation, Modest with 3-4 IVs for the best Noibat you can make holding Mawilite. I don't like having shinies I won't use in my game (just me being superstitious when I'm MMing). I would offer in the trading general, but they're mostly randomly found shinies with crap natures/IVs etc. I'd rather have an excellently bred Pokemon. So, my Eevee for Noibat w/Infiltrator and Switcheroo with excellent IVs, NOT shiny and holding Mawilite. It won't let me post the pic I took of it, I'll take another one if anyone responds[/spoiler

Horde chaining isn't the same as fishing chaining. It's not a true chain.

It's just the same as trying to encounter a shiny pokemon the normal way, except you're doing five encounters at once instead of one, so it takes one-fifth of the time (on average) to find a Shiny compared to the normal method.

How do you get BOXES FULL of eggs?

I'm MMing a Tyrunt and I'm riding left and right to get an egg. So I start with a flame body mon, some riding, I get an egg, continue riding, another egg, continue untill I have my party full, and most of the time the first egg hatches before I get the fifth egg, so I put the hatched mon into the box, get the new egg, go riding, and again - before I get the next egg the first one hatches.

And I've been told Tyrunts take a while to hatch, so how do you even do it with faster hatching mons?

I'm working on it.
I'm getting a baseline in FS right now. Got 150 encounters an hour without illuminate.
Shinies around encounter 110, 177 and 222. On a drought, at encounter 506 right now.
I expect to only see an increase in encounters per hour with illuminate. Maybe a 20 encounter increase.
So in theory, it will take less time to get a shiny using Illuminate, but only because you're encountering more pokemon within a specific timeframe.

I got my Shiny Protean Froakie in just under 5 boxes. But it was technically 11 boxes, since I had tried MM'ing for it before I fully grasped the concept of IV and nature breeding.
I would suggest making sure you have a Penta perfect Fennekin with the nature you want before you get too deep, being able to actually use my shiny is a wondrous feeling.

I actually got extremely lucky and picked up an English 5-IV mom from a breeding leftover thread and snatched a Japanese male from GTS that had the same 5 IVs, so this fucker will have at least 4 and the right nature no matter what. I definitely feel like I should at least be able to use it once I finally get it (it also makes me feel less terrible about flooding WT with all these leftovers)

You can find any normally found individual pokemon with Radar.

I actually think Radar makes the "rare" flower colors easier to get, shinies aside. I find a lot more orange Flabebe when chaining than when just ambling around in yellow flowers.

I have mawile, heracross, clauncher, skorupi, and noibat breedstock, ranging from 2-4 ivs.
Im particularly looking for a 5iv honedge, I have a few 5iv noibats to trade.

Safari is kinda wierd. I got 1 after trying for an hour the first time I went shiny hunting, then a second one almost exactly an hour later. After that nothing for like 12-15 hours. It's gotta be the easiest way to hunt shinys and still be guaranteed some decent stats and a good nature though, I just sit back and watch a movie.

I really do think that everstone and the Knot fuck with Shiny rates for better or worse (depending on the RNG).

IDK, maybe its just pure luck. I already had a Shiny Pyrour but I did this as a test to see how fast I could get a shiny just using the MM and no items. (Also partly because I found out that one set of the 2 other Pokemon I had breed to 3+ boxes weren't even MMing ... I thought the guy giving my the Pumpkaboo was in Germany but it doesn't have a tag or anything. Only fucking with tags now.
