I was playing at a snails pace, talking to NPCs, and instead of just hideously over-leveling one team of pokemon, I would try and catch everything in each area, and actually switch my party around.
Thank goodness the exp share gave me the patience to do that because it feels a lot better using different monsters than the same ones the whole game.
