is flamethrower sufficient to take down aegislash with this guy (@ focus sash, max SpA investment of course) or do I need to go for overheat instead?

Go for Heat Wave. It will benefit you a lot more since Heat Wave damages all enemies on the field so you could also horde EV train.
Plus it is stronger than FlameThrower

nice idea, but is it strong enough? of course my chandelure is supposed to do more than counter aegislash (namely, set trick room and maybe WoW some annoying opponent)

yeah, I just run the calculations too. overheat it is, since I noticed in simulators I hardly had to attack more than once

Seconded. Wait for Bank and breed one with Heat Wave, I had that on my chandelure in White and it was unstoppable. A pro is it hits multiple targets as well.
