Just what is it about dragons that captures the human mind? Throughout human history they've been THE ultimate animal despite the fact that they don't exist. Why not, I dunno, lions, or something? Why not horses? Did something happen in the distant past? How is it that all cultures evolved parallel allusions to dragons despite no contact with one another?

The tradition continues to this day, with people literally trying to get their kids born in the year of the dragon; the hidden dragon character in GunBound and of course the entire Dragon type in Pokemon.
