Glad you asked! They're extremely rare variations of pokemon with different color pallets. There's about a 1/8000 chance of encountering them in the wild randomly without any RNG manipulation or methods that increase your chance of encountering one, so it isn't uncommon for some players to have never seen one before despite having played one or more games.
>1/8000 is too high! How do I get one easily?
The most common methods are the Masuda Method, Shiny Fishing, and PokeRadar Chaining, however there seems to be a higher chance of finding shinies in the Friend Safari as well. The three aforementioned methods are covered in the guides section in OP.
>What's the Masuda Method?
Named after Junichi Masuda, one of Diamond/Pearl's developers, programmed a little something special into the games that increases the shiny rate when breeding under certain conditions. Simply, a pokemon traded from a foreign country should be breeded with a pokemon from your cartridge. This increases the rate of an egg containing a shiny by 4x in DPPt (1/2048), and 5x in later games (1/1638). See the guide in OP for more details.
>What's a shiny charm?
A key item in Gen V that increases your chances of finding a shiny. 1/2730 in the wild, and 1/1024 when using the Masuda Method. It cannot be traded through games.
>Is the shiny rate higher in the Friend Safari?
The majority of /vp/ thinks that this is true, but there hasn't been a datamine of the X/Y ROMs so nobody can say for sure. The rate appears to be on par with the Masuda Method's probability of 1/1638. It should be noted that you aren't allowed to use the Pokeradar in the friend safari, so chaining isn't an option there.

See the GFShinyGuide link in OP. While far easier to find and catch than with the other methods, the pool of available pokemon attainable from fishing is small, and because they much easier to catch, they aren't valued as high as other non-fishable shiny pokemon. Don't fret, you can usually throw a fishing shiny up on the GTS and get most any non-shiny pokemon for it including legendaries if some poor shmuck who doesn't know their worth falls for it. No hard shiny to normal fish ratios yet, but a rough estimate brings it around 1/200 at maximum probability. It should be noted that the mechanics of shiny fishing aren't entirely understood
>What is chaining?
When using the Pokeradar under extremely certain circumstances, one can increase their probability of encountering a shiny in grass patches. This is the more tricky method of the three, as it requires that you follow certain rules in order not to break your "chain" or "streak". The higher your chain, the more likely it is that you'll encounter a shiny. It should be noted that you cannot use the Pokeradar in the friend safari, but this is made up for by the (supposedly) higher shiny rates in the safari. See the guide in OP for more details.

I'm on the verge of giving up, played since Red/Blue and never had a shiny, only caught Pokerus twice.

I'm currently MM'ing, which I've been doing for the past month, I've bred probably close to 1000 mons and still nothing. I want to stop and start breeding up a team to use online but I will feel like all that time has gone to waste.

I don't know how much more I can take of this.

I don't even know, I'm working at maximum efficiency (I walk in the morning to get my hatching power going continuously) and I stopped dropping male/torrent froakies after I even got one with 6 perfect iv's, I'm using him as breeding stock now

I still think the weekend threads are unique in a way though. Most of the regulars are present and there's usually a stream where people can hang around and watch stuff while hunting.

My first MM took me a week and two weekends to bear fruit. My PC is still over halfway full of rejected Ralts.
But that shiny Ralts was my first owned shiny ever and it was a glorious feeling.

Then suddenly I started getting a bunch of shinies, like how I hatched a shiny female Adamant Mawile on the first egg when I was only intending to breed for a good nature. Or how every Pokemon I've MM'd since then has appeared within 5 boxes.

I've got 8 now and my friends hate me because of my ludicrous luck.

I'm about a box into MMing for a shiny Furfrou. The only other MM I finished successfully was for an Eevee after 970 eggs. I'm really hoping this goes by faster.

Currently MM'ing for a shiny Honedge. I'm only 4 boxes in, but I've been deeper just for a decent bread pokemon in Soul Silver. I pass the time by watching showdown threads and thinking up nicknames for the Honedge when it hatches. I'm trying to think of different ones for each gender too.

It's entirely possible you're not using the Masuda Method. It's based on region, not language.

If someone bought the game in the US, picked Japanese for the language, it is still a US Pokemon. If you breed it with another US English Pokemon then you are not MMing.

I decided to jerk off my 3DS and blow through a few boxes without items as a test with Pyrour ... got a Litleo in 2ish boxes even though I had blasted through 4-6 boxes that I can remember with Delphox.

I'm going bare bones for now on. It always stuck me as odd that so many report being 100 boxes in and such without luck in this game that makes Shinys easier than ever to get ... figure it's because they're trying to make flawless or close to flawless shinys though we don't know the RNG in this game well enough to do RNG breeding.

Do w/e you feel works best.

100 boxes is rare as hell. You just hear more of the reports because people are far more likely to repeatedly complain than repeatedly celebrate. You usually see them reported around 30 boxes because statistically you've got a 50% chance of getting at least one by that point.

I've never done this whole shiny thing before, so let me just make sure I'm not fucking anything up. I'm trying to get a shiny Ralts through breeding and the Masuda method. I put a Japanese Gallade that I got from GTS and my Gardevoir in the Day Care and have just been cycling up and down route 7 hatching eggs.

I have 120 Ralts in my PC. This IS normal, right?

The only way I have seen to get blessings from Masuda is to be unaware of the method, surrounded by at least 6 people who are at least 20 boxes in.

Then you'll get it in like 3 eggs and you can post how you weren't even trying.

Oh, duh. I thought it was for breeding or something and all I could think was "You already have the shiny, what reason is there to breed any further."

I wish I could read and hunt shinies. I guess I can sweet scent a horde between chapters or some sort of interval. It just sucks when you don't catch the initial view of the horde and have to wait for the camera angle to hit all of them again... JUST IN CASE!

Depends on the hatch times. If it's a longer hatch time I just collect 2 boxes worth, then fly to the infinite loop and jam a coin under the joystick. Shorter hatches I bike the route in front of the day care until one hatches, then I dump it and grab a new egg.

I just got a 4 Japanese IV Charmander from a Wonder Trade so now I'm going to try the Masuda Method for the first time. I'm pairing it up with a 5 IV Charizard that I already have and when the Japanese Charmander gets close to 36 I'll evolve it so the eggs will come faster.

That's not what it is at all. He just made a machine that apparently checks the id of the pokemon, identifies if it's shiny, and if it is it catches, otherwise runs.
He didn't make any improved method or anything, he just automated the safari.

Theirs, unless they released better stuff this past week they were still looking for a lot of support to their initial claims. Frankly I don't believe it's changed. Statistically speaking, you have a 50% chance of getting one at the end of box 30, and that certainly seems to be the average for people. Granted it's usually either 15 or something like 50, but that still places the average near 30.

One guy(me) came in a few threads back talking about his 100 boxes of Rufflets. Ever since then someone has reposted and increased the number. It jumped form 125 to like 450 between threads once. I fully expect it to be to 1000 by the time I actually hit 200 boxes.

I have a few friends who, like you, have never encountered a shiny. I've encountered at least one every generation, but I think part of it is I take time to grind while I play the main storyline. Generally I try to level my Mons 5 levels between each town.

Maybe. I've had a fair amount of luck with all of those things (case in point, I got pokérus twice: once right after getting my Tyrunt, and once after capturing Zygarde, and still have pokémon with it on my PC, AND I've found around 20 shinies since getting my copy of Y), but very few of my friends have done either of those.

Just kinda wondering, is there an updated guide to PokeRadar chaining? I can't seem to get up past about 30 without finding another random Pokemon.

Granted, I know I picked a tough one, starting with Mightyena... Still, I'd like to make sure I'm at least doing everything correctly. (Staying away from corners. Going for the most shaky grass. Resetting the radar if nothing usable shows up.) It just really sucks that I've been at it for a few days, and haven't had any luck.

just go for the farthest hardest shaking patch. when I say farthest, I don't mean reset untill you get the one 10 spaces away from you, but go after the one farthest from you if there are 2 hardest shaking grass. when you get to 40 just spam the radar

How long does it generally take for you guys who have gotten kinda good at it? Earlier today, I heard an average of something like 2-3 hours, but if it generally takes a few days, I'll get over it. Not to mention, Route 15 doesn't have a large enough patch of grass to follow most tutorials. (Like the original "must have 3 spaces between you and the grass".)

It depends on the patch you're working with. I got skiddo and furfrou in a half hour each, but the grass for them is the best in the game.

For me, it took 20-30 mins to get to a chain of 40 for zoroark, but I spent 2 and a half hours resetting for the patch. Thats just the successful chain. Azumarill took me 2-3 hours to do completely, only had to reset for 15 mins I think

This is the patch of grass I'm using, if you were curious. I have a feeling the size of the patch is what's making things so difficult on me. At least Mightyena is a common find, so starting the chain isn't miserable.

Usually takes an hour or so to get to 40 chain if your being careful and meticulous. After that it could be anywhere from 5mins-2 hours to actually find the shiny.

I kinda wonder if I'm occasionally mistaking medium sized patches for large ones. (Since usually the "breaking point" of the chain is finding a Skorupi.) Anyway, that's a relief. I'll leave the thread be, for now. Hopefully I can come back later with a successful capture.

How so? I'm following every guide I've read, and everything that people who chain do, but I can't seem to 'start' a chain without it getting 'broken' by a pokemon I don't want. Unless I'm just fucking retarded and am missing something.

If you're using repels, aren't aiming for weak shakes, avoiding edges and going 4+ spaces every time then your chain won't break. My guess is you're going within 4 spaces or wandering in to patches by accident

If you are, keep in mind that repels only work on pokemon that are weaker than your lead. If you're using a low level fainted synchro in your lead spot, repels won't do shit
