How do you get poisoned if you have to use a specific item.

Honestly, even though regenerator magic guard is pretty strong i think an ability to two held items is better as there are a lot of pokemon that don't even have 1 good ability, might as well 2

Actually, it occurs to me that that's not a fair assumption.

OP, to answer your question, it depends.

If mons who really appreciate it get the ability, then the ability. Double Evio Chansey or Evio/Lefties Chansey is a great case-in-point.

But abilities have limited distribution. An item that activates both abilities can be given to anyone.

There are broken combos on both sides, but the ability is only broken if those mons get it; the item is broken as long as ANY SINGLE ONE MON can make a broken combo out of two abilities.

Not the best examples.

The Ferrothorn one made me laugh though as you lose your Iron Barbs to gain an extra rocky helmet which does nothing.

I could see it if it was Damp Rock + Assault Vest, except then it would lose Hydration so what was the point.

Probably the ability one. Assault Vest isn't that great outside of bulky pure attackers like Conk/Machamp that actually have the baseline attack to back up their threats. Though, AV Hitmonchan is an interesting special wall with it.
