Only if your base defenses are better than the base HP, like Shuckle.

That's where I get confused.
Isn't it better to compensate the weakest stat so that it can be well balanced?
Except of course when it's dumb and pointless.
Like I wouldn't do that for Quiladin since it doesn't learn any good moves that focus on special attack.

Chesnaught/Quilladin is a physical tank. Its best build would be in HP and DEF or a Bulky-dos sort of build, only swapping the Speed to Def. Just expect to have to yank it every time someone chucks PRIORITYBRAVEBIRDmon at it.

You want to tank with Chesnaught and survive the biggest number of turns, so you need HP and Defense.

Shouldn't a tank be ridiculously powerful as well as ridiculously hard to take down. What's the point in being hard to kill if it only does chip damage?

Don't forget that folks who battle competitively are pretty much relying on high IVs to let their sweeping Pokemon take hits, devoting NO IV's to their HP and Defenses, so your poke would hit hard enough.

The standard build for Gliscor, another Physical Wall, is all HP and DEF.

depends. i know a lot of people use mons like this as pivots. Like if a physical attack is predicted, say a crunch from a ttar for example onto some psychic type you have, you switch to chesttesticles he takes the hit like a champ and you can counter with a supereffective move or predict the ttar switch and switch to a second mon thats not chesnaught. or use that turn to bulk up, raising your already usable attack by more than EVs would anywawy.

sweepers ideally with the right support or set up will be able to "sweep" that is outspeed and hopefully OHKO things on your opponents side until they throw something out to stop it. that is, if you havent eliminated the only thing that could.

eg your opponent has 4 things specially defensive, their own paper-thin slightly slower sweeper, and on physically defensive mon that walls your sweeper. If you eliminate that wall before throwing physicalsweepermon out, and get just one swords dance up, you pretty much win, barring priority moves.

Shuckle is supposed to Take HP because every point in HP for shuckle does more than an extra point in defense.

You basically go and give it a positive nature for one defense then fill the other defense with EVs as well as it's HP.

With 20 base HP, you have about 1.3x more health than you would without that extra HP, while EVs into defense would give you about 10% more defense.
