Glad you asked! They're extremely rare variations of pokemon with different color pallets. There's about a 1/8000 chance of encountering them in the wild randomly without any RNG manipulation or methods that increase your chance of encountering one, so it isn't uncommon for some players to have never seen one before despite having played one or more games.
>1/8000 is too high! How do I get one easily?
The most common methods are the Masuda Method, Shiny Fishing, and PokeRadar Chaining, however there seems to be a higher chance of finding shinies in the Friend Safari as well. The three aforementioned methods are covered in the guides section in OP.
>What's the Masuda Method?
Named after Junichi Masuda, one of Diamond/Pearl's developers, programmed a little something special into the games that increases the shiny rate when breeding under certain conditions. Simply, a pokemon traded from a foreign country should be breeded with a pokemon from your cartridge. This increases the rate of an egg containing a shiny by 4x in DPPt (1/2048), and 5x in later games (1/1638). See the guide in OP for more details.
>What's a shiny charm?
A key item in Gen V that increases your chances of finding a shiny. 1/2730 in the wild, and 1/1024 when using the Masuda Method. It cannot be traded through games.
>Is the shiny rate higher in the Friend Safari?
The majority of /vp/ thinks that this is true, but there hasn't been a datamine of the X/Y ROMs so nobody can say for sure. The rate appears to be on par with the Masuda Method's probability of 1/1638. It should be noted that you aren't allowed to use the Pokeradar in the friend safari, so chaining isn't an option there.

See the GFShinyGuide link in OP. While far easier to find and catch than with the other methods, the pool of available pokemon attainable from fishing is small, and because they much easier to catch, they aren't valued as high as other non-fishable shiny pokemon. Don't fret, you can usually throw a fishing shiny up on the GTS and get most any non-shiny pokemon for it including legendaries if some poor shmuck who doesn't know their worth falls for it. No hard shiny to normal fish ratios yet, but a rough estimate brings it around 1/200 at maximum probability. It should be noted that the mechanics of shiny fishing aren't entirely understood
>What is chaining?
When using the Pokeradar under extremely certain circumstances, one can increase their probability of encountering a shiny in grass patches. This is the more tricky method of the three, as it requires that you follow certain rules in order not to break your "chain" or "streak". The higher your chain, the more likely it is that you'll encounter a shiny. It should be noted that you cannot use the Pokeradar in the friend safari, but this is made up for by the (supposedly) higher shiny rates in the safari. See the guide in OP for more details.

I've been trying to MM a shiny Spinarak for the hell of it, seems like one of the fastest to spam eggs. Mother is Japanese with 0 perfect IVs, father has 4 perfect IVs. If anyone has a male non-English Bug Egg group pokemon with at least 2 perfect IVs, lemme know, because at this rate if I ever do hatch a shiny it will have crappy IVs.

OP related. I did not expect to see another shiny this quickly after how long mawile took. Forgot to buy premier and luxury balls after the aforementioned mawile so I had to do with the next best ball. Max IVs in Def and SpA, everything else isn't too special. Not a bad catch for a shiny caught 15 minutes in the safari after the last one.

Guys, Im scared. I wanted to go chain Klefkis and I grabbed 2 ralts eggs I quickly bred with a ditto I found in the safari for calm sync... this was in the second egg. It's female too. I got a shiny brave honedge a few days ago too, in 1 egg.

Properly calculated just now, make that 31 in SpD too for 3 maxed out IVs. Mid-tier on everything else. Wish he wasn't calm, but I can't really complain.

Shiny noob here. Is there any easy way to tell based on the stats screen if a pokemon is shiny? I haven't played since RB/SP and I've literally never seen a shiny in game before, so some of the newer stuff throws me off.

It definitely does, walking around it I've gotten 9 shinies, usually around 3ish hours each. That wouldn't happen with normal rates. Also the people weren't online so that isn't required, though I had unlocked their full safaris earlier.

Keep at it. I'm not sure if it's required that you unlock all three of the safari's pokemon but I would do it just to be safe. It doesn't feel as bad if you fail if you just do it while watching a movie or something, doesn't feel like wasting time so hopefully that can ease any more pain!

I had my best shiny catching day ever yesterday with 2 shinies. I tried my hand at chain fishing and got a clauncher at a 41 streak, then I was ev training my slowpoke and ran into a horde of scraggys with a shiny in it.

I've now caught 3 shinys in x, the most I've ever gotten in any game. I think I've previously only caught like 4 cumulative over every generation

I think I'm going too far in my quest for shinies guys. I've made it my mission to collect one shiny of every non-legend steel type pokemon. I've recently decided that that's easy mode, and I'm now going to get the legends as well.

I've ordered a copy of sapphire so I can SR for Registeel, and I got a friend with the Jirachi bonus disc. I also I have a copy of Platinum on the way, so I can SR for Dialga.

I am currently working through the most painful part of this whole process, playing pearl version so I can SR for Heatran.

Have I fucking lost it, or is there still hope for me?

The medicham can be used competitively given you get the megastone that is available in both games. His mega is awesome. This pretty thing doesn't have max iv I think. Just close to 31 hp, and couple mid to high 20s here and there on a stat. Yea lmk the skarmory would be going to a good home =]

I CAN VERIFY THIS. I'm used to chaining and have chained five pokemon this gen with the usual chains of 40. I saw this and immediately wanted to test it out, since before I've just continued chaining regularly when the strange music popped up, disregarding it. I tested it on a route 5 Doduo, four encounters later the up-beat music comes up and I start resetting without going in any more patches, I reset maybe five or six times and bam, the shiny patch appeared.

I was really surprised it actually worked, but I was still kinda suspicious so I tested it on Pachirisu, a long time shiny dream of mine, and after a few short failed chains the music comes up at chain 6 and I reset and... shiny patch.

Unfortunately pre-40 chained pokemon have the IVs of a regular wild caught pokemon (not two 31s like the ones you can catch with a chain of 40 or three 31s with a chain of 60)

tl;dr

This method works and it should make chaining vastly easier to those who have bad luck with chaining or hate having to do long chains. Wow. Get chaining!

Oh, the music went away after the first reset. It changed into the normal pokeradar theme but the shinies still popped up, I guess the up-beat music is just an indication that you can stop encountering and start resetting.

I like the big purple flower patch on Route 5 (or is it 6? Anyway the route between Luminose and Camphrier). You can get Furfrou and Skiddo from there, which are both great shinies... I also like route 7, the big purple/yellow area is great for Flabebes and Roselias.

Okay guys, im finally undergoing my quest to hunt for Shiny Articuno - Timid Umbreon just incase any weird clash BS happens.

My theory is that shininess is determined on the first encounter. I will of course pursue it 9 or 10 times before it would reach the cave when/if I find it shiny - At this point if it remains shiny, I shall save, prior to entering the cave.

I will then enter the cave, commence battle - And should I be correct, it should remain shiny.

If this is indeed the case, then I will be able to safely soft reset (Given the sheer odds of it being shiny in two separate instances to be near nil.) In order to catch it with a better nature or IV spread.

Sucks he doesn't gain Snow Cloak - 5 turns of heightened evasion would help put him on my Mono Ice team while waiting for Regice, but c'est la vie!

Wish me luck, I'll report back in the thread if any groundbreaking discoveries are made!

(Also I never have hunted a shiny before, only shit I found and couldn't catch was a Zubat back in Silver ;_;)

I don't think ANYONE with a Shiny Espurr is giving that fucker up. IDK why ... maybe it's animation in the pet feature are amazing or something? It's kinda bitter sweet ... I KNOW I have Pokemon people want (Fem-Ralts line- Modest Magician Braixen, White Flower Flabebe evol) that I could use to get other Pokemon I want .... but I only search for shinys I want and like.

That's why I only ever offer up Chansey (it was random, popped when I was farming lucky eggs) and Ponyta (got a flawless one waiting for my when the bank it up from my RNG breeding days).

Well, just recently hatched a shiny shinx, evolved to luxray and now it's a badass motherfucking golden luxray. Next mission is shiny Beldum. i'm on box 4-5 and ill keep you guys updated on when I get him.

can't promise anything good really ((depending on the person)) but i can breed any of the starters, charmander/bulbasaur, torchic, pumpkaboos, noibats, etc, you catch my drift.

i have yet to encounter a shiny naturally, while my girlfriend ran into both a shiny dugtrio and durant in one game playthrough. wtf?
