Seems like a fallacy, you don't need Megas to succeed though they are useful. Many of the Megas are actually good or are so-so side grades. It's like asking why I would use Salamance over Soul Dew Latios or something. That's doesn't mean he's useless or not viable because something is better than him. Yeah you're using your mega slot but you don't necessarily need Megas anyway.
