Firstly, his strength is his stance change. defense forme has whopping 150 base def and sp.def, but attack forme has something incredily low, in the regions of base 50. Basically, if he's staying in attack forme, he's dead, especially with his base HP being in the regions of ~60ish.
The trade-off is that his base attack AND special attack are brought up to something 150. Added that he has a strong movepool, and he's a very strong attacker. Remember that he gets access to a STAB priority move in shadow sneak, which is coming off base 150 attack.
furthermore, attack forme can protect itself by changing into shield forme with the priority move - king's shield, which also reduces any contacting attacker's defence by two stages (halving their attack). This means that, since his speed is so low, he can stay in shield forme until he's ready to attack.
That's where it ends, tough.
while in sword forme, he's vulnerable - low base HP and defensive stats means that strong, neutral or even not very effective hits will OHKO. As in, they will definitely kill it if he's not in shield mode.
What does that mean? It means that after an attack, you have to put your guard up again. King's shield is the only priority move he has that does this, if I'm right - also, if there are any other defence forme options, they're useless unless they have priority, as aegislashes low speed means he cannot use them in time.
Considering all this, what does this mean for aegislash? Literally, it means Aegislash is "Shield or die - the pokemon".
Shield. Or. Die.
