I have thought that Honegde was a normal sword and used by some warrior and then later it became a container for the warrior's spirit/soul. When in trouble Honedge would want you to crab it so you would have some spiritual connection and then the warrior spirit could control your body and make you fight like some goddamn chivalrous knight or shit.
