Did you guys ever only train your starter during your earliest playthroughs as a kid? Like end up sweeping through the E4 with a level 86 Charizard as the end?

I saw it as I had to give all the pokemon on my main team equal amounts of love and training otherwise why wouldn't I just put them in my PC with the rest of the pokemon I catch?

For me, it was my one, way-overpowered starter and five HM slaves. It was this way all the way until Gen III.

I always remember insisting on having my flyer be a species that is sufficiently bigger that the player character. It's dumb to imagine flying from town to town on a fucking Pidgey. Pic related.

Not as a kid, though I did do it once on Fire Red a few years back.

Ended up with a Level 89 Charizard. Was actually pretty fun.

I only did that when I was way younger with Gen 1 and 2. Only ever used my Blastoise and Typloshion, then just had hm slaves.

Well, no. But the first time I played I didn't know you could change your pokemon's position in the party, so I always started with Charizard, so I ended up beating the E4 with Lv.70-something Charizard and a bunch of others at Lv.30-40 which I don't remember what they were.

Anybody else never challenge a Gym Leader until you've beaten every single trainer in the Gym?

Yes, for exactly that reason. Especially in the older gens when XP wasn't on a curve. I also never wasted trainer XP on a pokemon that wasn't going to make it to the E4.
