You always want speed to be either 31 or 0.
You always want HP to be 31.
You always want your defenses to be 31.
You most likely (unless you're klefki foul play or sth) want at least one attack stat to be 31

breeding 5 IV's is extremely easy, quit being a lazy bitch and just do it.

Why? You need defenses, speed, and offenses on your average pokemon.

Edge Cases:
You wouldn't need offenses one something that uses no offensive moves except ones like Seismic Toss and Foul Play.
You don't want Speed on a Trick Room team.
You don't need defense on Shedinja.

Other than that you're just settling for a worse pokemon.

You can play just fine with 3 or 4 IVs.
But out of 100 battles you could've perhaps won one that you lost had you had that extra IV.

It's for people who want to go all the way. Not that it takes long, gen VI made breeding a joke.

31 Speed....ok you got me. The only things that need 31 Speed for Pokemon that are already fast, otherwise its not entirely necessary. 31 Speed is more of a luxury and gives the rare ability to unspeed other speed pokemon.
As for 31 Atk/SpA...its whichever way you deicde to setup your pokemon...either Physical attacker or Special Attacker.

THEN

pokemon with everstone 31/31/31/x/x/x + ditto with destiny knot with x/x/x/31/31/31 = 5-6IV pokemon

so easy, Oval Charm + Talonflame make it super easy to get/hatch eggs

One thing I'd like to point out:

With Pokemon Bank, you'll be able to use the same Pokemon you're breeding now for many years to come.

Why not take the extra hour to make sure your Pokemon has optimal Defenses, Speed, whatever? I'm not saying you NEED 5IVs, but it's pretty silly to knock people who strive for that. Those Pokemon WILL be surviving hits or outspeeding things they wouldn't otherwise, and that's worth it to some people.

Aside from the "we're hardcore at grinding on vidya gaems stop being a pussy" type bullshit people use to inflate their egos, there is an actually good reason.

People are competitive, want to win, and getting better stats (even if it is slightly time consuming) directly increases the chances of you winning.

Sure you CAN get by without it, but you can't deny that your pokemon would be BETTER with more defense or hp or whatever you didn't take the time to IV breed for. A lot of offensively built pokemon have specific speed or attack EVs that are just enough to OHKO threats, under the assumption that they have 31 IVs to do so. If your stats are lesser, even in the defenses, it is just making it easier for your opponent to win.

It just comes down to those who want to win above all else will do everything they can to tip the odds in their favour.

1) Get one Pokemon with 5 IVs.
2) Breed it until you have more Pokemon with 5 IVs.
3) Trade those 5 IV Pokemon to other males with 5 IVs
4) Now breed the 5 IV Pokemon with any female in same egg group
5) Literally takes 10-15 mins to get 5 IV of any Pokemon you want.

Dittos and stuff are irrelevant.

These estimations are still quite optimistic. Working from scratch, the whole process can take a couple of hours, especially if you're passing multiple egg moves. But it's stupidly reasonable compared to how it used to work.

And once you get a good collection of 5 IV Pokemon, it's easier to breed more using things in the same egg group instead of using the Ditto.

This coming from someone who spent tons of hours trying to get dittos that had 2 perfect IVs back in 4th gen. Having a wide variety of both hidden ability pokemon and dittos, both with guaranteed 2 IVs being all but HANDED to you now does make it a hell of a lot easier to start with. The destiny knot upgrade, along with mothers passing down abilities frequently and egg moves even... The time it takes and the difficulty of getting a proper 5x IV pokemon is far far far less now.

But yeah, it's easier to bitch and not put forth the much reduced effort to get a perfect pokemon, you're right anon.

The extra stats are for the moves that will not one shot you if you boost them. EQ will rape you, but if a non SE move is used you could survive and kill them instead.

No, I don't think it's ethical, and yes it's cheating, but I don't give a shit. Considering the circumstances I don't blame anyone for using it. These new mechanics are only a band-aid, not a cure. IV breeding is still fucking awful.

I've done dozens of calculations with my personal team (Klefki, Sableye, Forretress, Agilinite, Scarfninja, and Megados) and I haven't found a single one of their threats that would need exactly one more point in speed to outspeed more mons.

Not using my case as the universal standard, but just using an example where that 1 extra point isn't critical.

Eh I tried breeding the first time ever.

Took me about 6 hours to get me a perfect Hawlucha with 5 ivs where it matters. I also got a fuckton of other 5 ivs with different traits. I can now proceed to trade with other people that done the same.

Put Pokegen on the picture, the trading aspect is almost gone. You can just go and get what you want, no hardwork or anything just go there and get it. No social eithe, why would you look for other people pokemon when you can get the best by yourself?

And in the end of the day, why do it? Why put the extra effort when you could just bypass this entire shit and go to a simulator?

also op, max defensive IV do matter. 10% of my games so far have been won because I got ohkos I shouldn't have vs poorly IVed opponents or tanked hits with >10hp that would have been death without flawless stats.

Not him, but no, not really. When breaking into a new egg group, using the most efficient breeding methods (barring the parent swap trick) and depending on the gender ratio, it can EASILY take 5 hours. Most of that time is spent getting 2 quad perfect parents, after which it's a breeze.

Agreed except for speed. In many cases, you don't really care. Why does a wall need 0 or 31 speed? It's irrelevant in just about every case. But I agree, you just about always want max defenses and hp, or a specific hp for fractional reasons, and just about always need one attack stat maxed. To me, that means 4 perfects is normally "necessary."

Every pokemon benefits from more health. Every pokemon benefits from better defense, better special defense. Every pokemon benefits from better speed (except for very specialized builds that want none at all.)

The only choice, OP, is between SP Attack and normal Attack. Minimum for "needing" IVs is always 5. Only having 3IVs is a waste of your own time. If you're only going to breed a 3, you may as well just use garbage you find in the bushes.
