Gen 1's were meh to me and same goes for typhlosion.

Samurott's makes sense, though. Otter becomes a giant otter, and it goes from a trainee to a samurai to a general, hence going on all fours to represent the horseback generals. Doesn't stop that the Unova starters suck competitive wise.

If it ever gets a Mega Evolution, it'll probably stand bipedal to represent the general getting off the horse.

Johto is the worst region in terms of pokemon because 90% of it's pokedex is just shitmons. Delphox is ok. It's still mediocre compared to previous designs we've had but it's nowhere near as bad as chestnaught. All tho I personally think braxiens design is better but I really wish this gen didn't have the same concept being abused over and over again. We have people on their feet instead on on all fours, beards everywhere, and spikes everywhere. They were really dumb this gen creativity wise.

Honestly, I feel like Gen VI has the best set of starters we've ever had. The only two Gens that could possibly have had better starters were III and IV.

Then again, my favorite starter evo is Feraligatr and I actually really like Samurott. It's probably just my shit taste showing.

I understand why, it's a fairly shitty and boring design. That fucking hair is ridiculous. Mega Blaziken fixes a lot of the errors with the original design and makes it more interesting to look at, such as having the flame ribbons, why weren't they on the original? I was just going off of my personal experiences with each, and III, IV, and VI are the only generations where I felt like there was no wrong choice for a starter. And while I despise the Hoenn region and wish to never have to set foot in that godforsaken hellhole ever again, I still think that Sceptile, Blaziken, and Swampert are all class-A or higher bros.
Things like Meganium, Serperior, and even Blastoise (and FR/LG Venusaur) all felt like dead weight for the longest time in-game, which for me is the surest sign of a shit starter.

While I didn't form my primary opinion on the basis of aesthetics, the fact that the Gen VI starters actually had some level of thematic unity (Fighter/Mage/Thief) makes me far more sympathetic to their designs than those of previous generations.

Sinnoh was at least cohesive, it was a mountainous region and it looked and felt like one. Yes it was sometimes hard to traverse, but that's the fucking point, it's mountains. Unova and Kalos try to have every type of climate and terrain and just feel like an incoherent mess.

That's a design flaw with HMs, not with regions. They shouldn't need to be taught in order to be used, that's all. But needing special methods to traverse terrain makes it interesting to traverse.

I think Delphox's art was fine, for the most part. It's mostly her fucking horrible model that's the problem. It's like whoever was in charge said No, forget that shit, just have it stand up rigidly, and stop trying to animate it!

It doesn't need many changes, but it does need changes. Greninja I actually dislike personally, but I definitely see its appeal and know it's a good design, for people that like that sort of thing. The tongue scarf especially grosses me out.

That's because regions like Unova and Kalos are based on countries/cities that have actual changes in climate. The four generations of japanese regions were just that, representations of a limited geographical area. Of course they'd feel more cohesive, they had a inspirational location that was far more focused.

Because the idea of Delphox is good. Braixen looks really good. It also has a good personality. Kind of proud, but also very playful and happy. Then you get to Delphox and the whole concept goes to shit because "lel sorceress."

Art has a lot to do with how a pokemon is perceived though. I hate Infernape in gen 4 when it just looked dumpy and stupid, but a slight shift in pose changed my mind in gen 5. The anime helped too (youtube clips).

Greninja's a ninja, and even when it was unconfirmed I wasn't too bothered by the tongue and thought it was a pretty neat idea. And I really think that Chesnaught pulled off the Armored Warrior concept wonderfully.

Again, that's my opinion. I feel like each one gives a very clear sense of what it's supposed to do just by looks alone, and that all three perform that role relatively well when all's said and done.

(The sprites we're using for them here are terrible, though. Goes to show how much the 3D actually matters for most of the Gen VI designs.)

When fantasy games do it, you get fantasy settings to go with it. When Pokemon does it, you get a bunch of towns and cities and then the obligatory cave/desert/etc. and nothing fantastic or original at all. It gets boring fast.

My problem with Sinnoh is that a lot of it is just caves thanks to Mt. Coronet taking up such a large portion of the map. They don't look very interesting, they force you to use nearly all of your HMs and ambush you with fodder 'mons any time you aren't using a repel, and the whole mountain range has a placement in the middle of the map that blatantly makes a lot of the surrounding areas feel segregated. Even when you're not in one of those caves, most of the routes don't look particularly interesting and the towns look disappointingly bland.

Sinnoh is one of those regions that has potential, but overall just isn't very fun to travel around.

It makes sense for there to be variety in those cases.

In Pokemon, you're in one region, but regions like Kalos or Unova, rather than trying to be interesting on their own, try to have a little bit if everything so they can be a mini-world.

Final Fantasy XII's Ivalice is one of the best overworlds ever, and it had a bunch of obligatory areas thrown in everywhere. You're simply being biased and selective by using two different descriptions for the same thing. They're both fantastical worlds.

You don't understand what fantastical actually means in this context, do you? Fantasy settings aren't limited to a specific range of technology. They can rely modern technology, early historic technology, and even futuristic technology as long as those settings incorporate a theme that can easily be identified as a fantasy setting.

Pokemon has that. It has monsters, it has magical moves, it has fantasy-based architecture such as castles and ancient structures with their own backstories and myths, it has powerful creatures of legend.

That's not a problem at all. The problem is that you don't seem to have a clue of what you're actually talking about.

The only town I can think of was the rock gym's town because of the mountainside and such, and that still does nothing for the region as a whole. If it can a be a good town in any region, so what? You should be able to look at a town in a good region and go "yeah, this is a Kalos town" there.

The only region you can really do this in is Hoenn, with Sinnoh and Johto having bits of it.

No, see, the issue is that you can't actually comprehend the issue. The point of a fantastic setting is that it doesn't need to be limited to a specific area of geography. That's just it. That's why a lot of gamers appreciate the so-called "clusterfuck" worlds you would typically find in a JRPG. This is a really common thing.

If you prefer the more "cohesive" setting of Sinnoh, that's fine. But you're using subjective terms to try and give meaning to an objective approach that you're not actually right about. You don't decide what makes an objectively good region and what doesn't, you have personal preferences and base your opinions off of that.

What are you blabbering about? Hoenn has a fuckload of towns that could have easily gone in any region, and so does Sinnoh and Johto. I can't think of a SINGLE town in Sinnoh that would make me relegate it to Sinnoh itself if I've never seen it.

The majority of RPG maps aren't any closer to a "whole world" than Kalos. They're all just regions, actually. And Kalos has plenty of logical and well-designed cities, as others have pointed out.

I dunno about you guys but I always thought that the starter Pokemon were only really meant for playing through the story.

Their usability in the meta-game (or lack thereof) is just happy coincidence.
I do agree with Gen V having the worst starters though... why is Emboar the only dual-type? Why is the second type Fighting AGAIN?

WHY DOES IT NOT LEARN ANY DECENT FIGHTING MOVES UNTIL WELL INTO THE LATTER HALF OF THE GAME?!

It's been a tradition of mine since R/B/Y to always go through the first playthrough with the Fire starter, and Tepig was just dissapointment.
