It's based off of Son Goku, it's a fire monkey that's no worse than a fire horse or dog, and if something like Infernape appeared in Gen 1 everyone would revere it like they do Charizard, and Arcanine. There's not much to hate it in at all, it just doesn't appeal to me but I can't see it as a bad design. I'd also say Infernape is a bit more timeless than some of the Gen 1 mons, a few just don't hold up well today.
