If you do that you're likely to get Pokemon that just won't work, at all. Some are simply not fast, bulky or hard-hitting enough or have a useful enough movepool to work on any team.

It's better to take Pokemon that are good, but have some weakness that relegates them to lower tiers or are in a lower tier because they're simply outclassed by other Pokemon.

I just do random mode on Pokemon Showdown. It's easier and more fun.

my friend and I random a pokemon, then build a team of 3 around whatever we get. We make sure to keep them with in the same tier.

You don't need a completely random team just to break the mold, but that's just my opinion. I enjoy using things that nobody else ever uses, but are still really effective with a well built team.

Leafeon's become a recent favorite, I have to say.
