Typical argument from someone who doesn't know anything about Smogon.

Mindlessly copying sets is typically frowned upon in most cases. The only exception is for new players, and that's only so they can learn the ropes. Their articles are supposed to be taken as advice and not something to live and die by. Players who come up with creative sets are praised and are generally the ones who actually win tournaments.

Just because they don't gimp themselves by not using a shitty Pokemon when another one does its job better in every way doesn't mean they're not being creative. If you're using a team that relies upon the sun, then why not use Ninetales?

And to add on to this, the very existence of tiers give Pokemon more usage. If there were no tiers and everything was allowed, then the metagame would even be more centralized. There's no reason to using something like Altaria over Dragonite outside of "m-muh bro". The tier list system allows plenty more Pokemon to be used and to actually stand a chance against others.

Clearly that's why they have multiple different sets for each Pokemon with several paragraphs of alternate options and strategies to use.
