If you don't ever switch Pokémon during battles, you will end up losing most of them. Almost guaranteed all of them against good players. It's one of the most important concepts about battling the master. Just because NPCs seem to resent switching doesn't mean there's some code to uphold (it's so kids can get through story mode without getting overly frustrated with the game).
