The legendaries this generation are based on the animals that live in Yggdrasil. Xerneas representing the deer that live in the tree, Yveltal representing the eagle that lives at the top and Zygarde who lives in the roots of the tree underground.

Xerneas is/are the stags in the branches

and Zygarde is Nidhoggr

obviously pokemon designs draw from multiple sources, but if you're looking for a norse framework, it's that.
