Can this even really be debated anymore? We can all handwave Yellow to being an anime adaptation, but with Pika doing that in this game? All idea of what the cries really are becomes null and void because of this inconsistency. Plainly, the anime speak IS what the cry is, regardless of what sound they make in game.

The anime has some excellent cries, but it also has a ton of shitty cries. It seems like in the early days--although they certainly had a bunch of shitty "say-its-name-in-a-high-pitched-voice cries" I'm not denying it--they were slightly more inclined to use actual animalistic cries compared to anything after Johto. If they went for semi-realistic sounds more often--like Rhyhorn or Charizard (yes I know Charizard is saying "Lizardon," but it's not just a guy growling "Lizardon," it's processed to sound like a roar)--the anime cries would win hands-down.

Pikachu is straight-up Game Freak's mascot and it works swell for them. Combined with how Pikachu's name is universal in all languages, he's the easiest to promote and work with.

Besides, Pikachu saying its name in X/Y was a test-run for the ElectricYellow remake.

In all honesty, Japanese anime cries aren't that much better in many cases. Main Pokemon sound decent enough, but a lot of Pokemon-of-the-days are pretty lame.

The same goes for the game in most cases. The generic beeping and static most of them have is annoying at best.
