Whats faster, keep breeding while throwing/storing away non-shinies + restoring on eggs
or
save, grab 5 eggs, give yourself hatching power 3 and hatch, soft reset when nothing happens (also does that still give me the same MM chance if I always reject the first egg after reloading?)

If the Pokemon is shiny or not, is already determined when the egg is given to you.

Its not that easy, you will need some luck too.
It can happen that you do everything right and your chain breaks.
Just dont give up, you will hit 40 somehow.
But it will take longer than 10 minutes.
To get to chain 40 it takes about 1 hour.
From then its a piece of cake.
Just dont get too excited and accidentaly step in a bad patch
Just reset your radar till the shiny patch will appear.

Nothing really changed, just be patient while chaining and dont give up too soon.
It takes a while but it will be worth the effort.

collecting 5 eggs and then soft resetting takes too long. if you were to MM for 2 hours, hatching and boxing on route 7, you would have gotten half a box to 1 whole box of eggs on top.

I might be wrong, but eggs stats are set soon as it's made. so soft resetting would do nothing, except make you hatch the same thing over and over again

chaining refers to

pokeradar chaining in which you use the pokeradar item to find the same pokemon multiple times in a row, which increases your chances of finding a shiny to about 1/200 if im not mistaken.
OR
chaining can refer to fish chaining which you stand in one spot (usually where the fishing line would surrounded by rocks walls etc) and there is an increased shiny chance when doing as such

I tried chaining in Platinum, it was actually pretty easy once you got used to it, I got at least a shiny Shinx or two, can't remember if I got anything else from it. I haven't tried it much in X yet, too busy MMing hundreds of not-shiny eggs.

from my experience its go for the hardest shaking one that is not touching your character.
and if there are 2 hardest shaking ones, go for the furthest one.

There's a hidden number tied to the egg. If it matches yours, it's shiny.

If someone hatches one of your eggs and it's shiny, that means it wasn't going to be shiny for you.

I personally found 3 within the space of 4 hours once. 6 Safari shinies overall, on and off searching for about a week.

I have found two in under an hour three times as different days. Sometimes you find and sometimes you don't, there's no tricks in here, just keep looking. During the week I spent three days trying to find anything and did not have any luck, but yesterday I found three in the same safari.
