So /vp/, i'm fairly new to competitive battling. I fully learned the concept of EV's a few days ago and I went ahead and EV trained a few of my pokemon already. I already have a team I want to use, but i need some opinions on how to construct them.

-Sylveon; Rash nature
> 252 Sp. Atk/252 Spe/ 4 Sp. Def

-Hydreigon; Adament nature
>252 Atk/252 spe/4 def

-Blissey; Bold
>252 HP/252 Sp. Def/4 Def

-Lucario; Hasty
>252 Atk/252 Spe/4 atk

-Ampharos; Impish
>252 Spe/126 Atk/130 Sp. Atk

-Delphox; Bold

I didn't really base this around natures either, and IV's seemed like a difficult concept to me. So what should I do with this team, /vp/? Alright for babby's first competitve team?

Get someone with a Ditto safari. Catch Ditto with good IVs, then breed until you get an optimal nature for your Pokemon. Then breed that Pokemon holding an Everstone with your Ditto holding a Destiny Knot and you should get some fairly competent Pokemon easily, it's how I started. As for your team:
- Sylveon does not benefit at all from lowering one of its defenses.
- Hydreigon is a poor physical attacker.
- Bold Blissey is best Blissey, but put those EVs in Defense, not Sp. Def.
- Hasty Lucario is great for mixed attacker.
- Impish is bad for Ampharos, you want a Sp. Atk. boosting nature, preferably Modest.
- Bold is OK for Delphox, but I'd recommend Timid nature, for its speed.

Overall, giving EVs to HP is better than giving them to defenses, always keep this in mind.

I forgot to add, this isn't that bad of a team, but it's not as competent as it could be. I recommend trying it out in Battle Maison and getting a lot of BPs to buy the neat items.

Great advice, but I'm still a bit lost. Now where would I get the destiny knot, and how do I know the Ditto I catch has good IV's?

You get the Destiny Knot in Cyllage's hotel, talk to the maid.
Friend safari Pokemon will always have two perfect IVs, the others are still 1/31 chances of being perfect so you might luck out and get three or even four perfect IVs. The Destiny Knot guarantees to pass down five IVs from the parent's total of twelve IVs. Do you understand the concept of IVs or should I explain it a bit more?

For Hydreigon, run Draco Meteor + physical moves. You still have enough power to use it against physically bulky threats.

For competitive/wifi battling, you could still do decently depending on moveset, but you really want to at the very LEAST have both natures+EVs+moves down for that.

Hydreigon still has 105 base Attack and a fantastic physical movepool. Would it be better to replace it completely for a special attacking one? Yes. Is Hydreigon a poor physical attacker? No, it's just poor due to the opportunity cost compared to its special set.

I'd also argue that Calm is a far better investment of nature for Blissey than Bold is.

If you have access to Unaware or Magic Guard Clefable, it'll run a Calm Mind + Wish set far better than Florges. Florges if not.

I know you didn't say you based on natures, but they will make loads of difference

Sylveon should NEVER have a sp.def lowering nature because thats its best stat. It should be either bold to raise its weak defense, calm to raise its high sp.def even higher, or modest if you want it to be offensive.

Hydreigon shouldnt have Adamant because its mainly a special attacker. if you want him to have some physical moves, go with either a mild/rash/hasty/naive nature and go with a mixed set.

Hasty is OK for lucario, as it can function well as a mixed attacker. A pure physical or special attacker with an adamant/jolly/timid/modest nature is often better but it depends on what your team needs to cover.

Ampharos isnt good with impish either. Modest is the preferred nature.

Delphox is better off with timid or modest as its a special attacker.

I suggest getting a utility pokemon to put up some entry hazards or a rapid spinner to get rid of entry hazards on your side of the field. Forretress can handle both of these pretty nicely, but tyranitar is a good stealth rocker and so is skarmory.

Think of it as a locked value for every stat. It ranges from 0 to 31 and determines how many extra points your Pokemon will have in that stat. A Pokemon with 31 HP IVs will have the maximum HP at lv. 100, for its base stat, that is, while a Pokemon with any other won't have as much HP. This is without counting the 63 possible points from EV training.

Basically what you want to do is try to get IVs for your Pokemon's most important stats. Defensive Pokemon want perfect HP and defenses while offensive Pokemon want perfect Attack, Sp. Atk. and Speed. Since there's no way not to benefit from 31 IVs, most players tend to aim for a "perfect" Pokemon, with 31 in all of its stats.

It's also worth pointing out that with a Scope Lens + Focus Energy, Hydreigon will always score a Critical Hit when attacking. That means that Draco Meteor is effectively a 195 BP STAB moves with no drawbacks save having 90% accuracy. That makes full Special sets somewhat more appealing, given that your strongest move will no longer weaken with every use.

Okay, now I'm catching on, but how do I know how many IV's are in what stat?

And thanks, everyone, for the advice. I didn't implement IV's because it seemed like a lot to take into count. I'll be sure to breed for the appropriate natures.

You talk to the IV judge in Kiloude city's Pokemon center. He'll tell you what your Pokemon's highest IV is. Like, "your Pokemon's speed is pretty good, stats like those can't be beat.". That means it has a perfect speed. Sometimes he'll include more than one stat and that's how you know you have multiple perfect stats.

Ahh, okay. Thanks.

Now since everyone is saying Hydreigon is a poor physical attacker as a dragon, can I switch out for a Haxorus? I used it in my in-game team and it has an insanely high attack stat, and it has a careful nature; so should I breed for an attack boosting nature or one for speed?

Please don't use Haxorus. Use Garchomp, Salamence, or Dragonite, all are better than Haxorus. Even if the Dragonite has Inner Focus.
