Normally the two parents pass down 3 random ivs from their 12. Destiny knot increases that number to 5. Power items force the IV down but you can't use both it and a destiny knot

If one of the parents is holding a destiny knot, 5 random IVs are passed from either parent.

The remaining 3 IVs for normal breeding or 1 for destiny knot breeding is randomly generated, between 0-31.

So you give your ditto with 3 IVs the destiny knot and roll eggs until something 4-5 comes out? Any way to guarantee the other 2 IVs through the pokemon that isn't ditto?

Gendered Pokemon are easier as you can start breeding the babies with each other when you get 3-4 iv pokemon. With genderless or mono gender Pokemon you just have to get luck with Ditto.
