the actual songs are great, but the instruments are shitty. they sound too realistic, just like most 3ds games that have prequels on ds.
the synthy music in the gba and ds games make you think "Hey, this is a Pokemon game!" in x and y, it's "Meh, just another 3ds game"

i wish they would just stop doing that. synthy music is nice.

I never said I liked the gym leader music, I think its pretty shit too. However before getting thsi game I heard nothing about the soundtrack other than it being bad BECAUSE of the gym theme.

It had a lot of good music. But:

They also took a step away from the polyphony styled music, which had mixed results. The best ones were those that had their unique soundfont selection. The songs arent as catchy as before and those that didnt use a varied soundfont were really generic and boring. And there was a lot less music.

It was set up to create an atmosphere. It works out great with headphones.

Most people were just used to the catchy rave music with the previous games.

Overworld music was fucking glorious
Battle Themes were absolute shit, with a few exceptions:
>E4 Theme
>Champion Theme
>Legendary Theme (now THIS theme was incredible, 10/10 would put on a 50 MB iPod)

But seriously that fucking Gym Leader theme was so bad, it's just such a fucking oversight, like Junichi Masuda was interrupted while he was halfway-through making it and told, "okay Masuda, we need to launch the game, give us what you've got."

I can't wait until he can take a stab at the Hoenn Remakes, he's going to mop the fucking floor 1000 times over with THAT soundtrack.

Whatever you call that really catchy shallow music. Something which I'd also describe Initial D's soundtrack (which is a favorite of mine by the way).

If you want to use the music for atmosphere, you don't want the music to stand out too much. I'd have been fine with something "epic" (ignore the negative associations with this word please) like Route 15 for a boss music as well since Pokemon's not a game where you can expect it to pull off an intended atmosphere.
