All it did was shake up your preparation a bit by forcing you to carry a couple more items and waste a single turn to eat one. Not that it mattered, because you've got quite the inventory space.
There were so many things to consume that you could just eat those and not worry about hunger.
You can eat oran berries right before fainting, eat the various worthless berries you've picked up or even just plain die and have a reviver seed fill you up to full again.
If you feel lucky you could also eat grimy food.

The absolute lack of post game, being unable to take multiple missions and words words words on the other hand. That's what seriously bothered me.
