Artists of /vp/, what do you think is the most effective method of drawing sugimori-esque Pokémon?

Are there any good tutorials out there on how to draw/paint Pokémon as good as pic related? I've looked at a few but none are very specific.

Also, if you are an artist I would appreciate any tips/recommendations on software, thank you

His style is very simplistic with only a 2-5 color palette for each pokemon MAX, and simple shading techniques. However it is a pointless endeavor to exactly copy a person's style. You should attempt to draw like yourself and take inspiration from the general feel of his work but you will never recreate his work exactly, he is him and you are you, you cannot draw exactly like someone else. You can get very close if you try but what is the point of that? Don't you want to become your own artist?

Natural arcs. Plant your wrist on the page and just flex it back and forth without moving your fingers. Chain a bunch of these together in varying directions until a pokemon falls out. This is seriously pretty much all he does.

When i read 'Sugimori style' i imagine it as those watercolor art from Gen 1 and 2.

Gen 3 to present seem to be just generic stuff

I've seen plenty of people on deviantart that are every bit as good as Sugi on his style. There are seriously no discernible differences and if you told me it was official art, I'd buy it without hesitation.

For software, anything that isn't Microsoft Paint should do the trick. If you can use brushes with varying opacity and can work easily within outlines, that's pretty much all you need.

If you've got the patience you could even emulate Sugimori's style in Paint though you wouldn't be able to properly resize it and the colors / edges wouldn't be as smooth as they'd need to be.

For overall tips: Study his work, a lot. There are high resolution versions of his art out there - find them and study the linework and the way certain shapes are shaded. Practice drawing shapes and shading them the way you think Sugimori would shade them, then compare them to his images (things like Poke Balls, spikes on a Pokemon, claws, etc.). Just practice as much as you can and you'll eventually get it. Once you get a good feel for it it's a really easy style to do.

tl;dr - study his art and practice forever.
