second attempt at the sugar glider starter. First Evo is Grass, then second is Grass/Flying.
wanted the first evo to look adorable and like a little possum that has a leafy tail.
The second evo I wanted to look like he was wearing goggles like he's jumping out of a plane to do base jump.

havent really done the final evo as im too tired.

I think the best way to go about it is to just get designs/ideas and maybe even names of the Pokemon first. Then figure out what type would make sense for them. Then change common types to spread distribution.

Making a Pokemon a different type can be as simple as a palette swap so it's not a big deal to sort out early imo.

Every region is weak in certain typing. Sinnoh is notorious for lacking Fire types, for example. Each area is generally heavy in certain types as well.

Australia is probably heavy in Poison, Ground, and Fire, but weaker in Ice.

You could make an Ice-based Snake if you want. Make its scales look like shards of ice and call it Hissnow.

So, our main options for the Grass-type are the Sugar Glider, the Flying Fox and the Echidna. I think we should probably go with the Sugar Glider, since we already have some art for it, and it's a fairly unique starter. A grass Echidna would be too similar to Chespin, and a grass Fruit Bat sounds more like what we need to fill the annoying-as-fuck-batmon niche.

A big part of this is putting a foot down when something looks like shit or barely passes as a conceivable pokemon design.
On the opposite side of things, general opinion needs to be acknowledged, instead of resorting to a core group for the 'most informed' opinions.

Take it upon yourself to think up of some good characters, or starter designs. Don't read the thread yet, doodle as many ideas as you can.
Then, if you have the time, check through and refine your ideas depending on what other people seem to agree on. Everyone has a problem so far where they believe their ideas are the correct ones, or that some things are more 'canon' than others.

You obviously never spent time in gen /vp/. Their entire philosophy is 'every anon gets an opinion'. Surveys on mon designs rely on those opinions. Everything you see is consensus approved.

"Kitick" and "Kiboom"

Kitick is the "Nervous Bird" Pokemon. It's dex entry reads: "This little POKEMON has the explosive power to destroy a small village. It is terrified of its own strength."

It evolves by using Explosion or Self Destruct in Battle and then reviving before the battle is over.

Kiboom is the "Blasted Bird" Pokemon. It's dex entry reads: "After violently exploding, this POKEMON has grown bitter and wants nothing more than to destroy some more."

I'm not set on typing. The names are based on Tick Tick Boom and Kaboom.

Not FANTASTIC, but I doodled something up. Kinda froggy, like most interpretations. single stage, learns lots of -drain moves. Possibly with an ability that converts opponent to its typing (fairy/dark) to reflect mythology as well?

Keep in mind (and this goes for other people too) starters are designed to have an attractive colour palette. Something cute and eye-catching.

I can't into art, but an Easter Snake-necked Turtle might be an interesting idea for a fakemon. It could have a more snakelike head with a longer neck that rests coiled on top of its shell.

I figured it would be a turtle with a snake for a head, if that makes any sense. So we'd have legs or flippers or something, depending on what direction we'd want to take it. The real turtle is semi-aquatic but we could make it fully aquatic, fully terrestrial or leave it at that.

Concept-wise it's pretty simple so it all comes down to color and possibly the shape of the head.

Back in those create-a-pokemon threads, a guy had a cute idea where a pokemon started off as a basket-type thing.
It would evolve into either a snake curling out of a basket if it was happy, or a snake staying inside if it was mistreated.

My suggestion is combining the idea, so it's a snake-headed turtle where the basket is the shell. What do you think?

Oh wow, a PokeAus. I once helped out on another forum that was working on something like this (pretty sure that whole spiders chasing you thing stemmed from me a couple years ago too), but it sadly died out by the looks of it. I contributed a few designs including player characters and wrote the story plot for them.

Fire - I think everyone likes the Thorny Devil idea and no other ideas have really compared so far.

Grass - The sugar glider seems the most creative and well thought out so far. Birds are off the list because of genvp and I don't think any other suggestions have really been as good.

Water - This is the only one up in the air isn't it? I like the Dolphin and the Platypus a lot but I agree a Dolphin 'mon is probably better suited for an ocean area.

I'd say lock in Fire and Grass. Have a quick vote for Water. Mine would be for Platypus.

If Noivern didn't exist it would be a great opportunity to make a fruit bat into a wyvern-looking beast, but sadly that isn't a viable option.

If the baby could learn a variety of attacks you could make that the specific evo trigger.

Level up + Water = Belted
Level up + Sound = Kookaburra
Level up + Grass = Paradise

If you went that way you could just make it try and evolve (up to) 4 times when it hits 20 and you just hit B until you get the one you want.

I could swear there's another Pokemon like that in the real games.

Otherwise you could just keep it simple and have it learn the specific moves in consecutive levels.

I'm thinking the honey ant has a piece of amber instead of the usual abdomen. It could be insect/fairy perhaps.

Couldn't quite get the point across with the Tawny Frogmouth. It'd do well as grass/flying because of how well they mimic tree branches.

The final form was originally drawn by someone else and I just added some stuff, but one of the ideas I had when working on this other Aussie Pokemon game was a platypus with a surfboard theme. I always thought that'd be really cool, but I was never able to get it to look right.
