Defog being around helps out alot but SR is still a thing, and will deter Avalugg from coming into play until and if its dealt with, Avalugg is a spinner itself though. The Gengar example was to show how any special attacker with moderately high special attack could OHKO Avalugg, especially if SR is in play with a non-SE move. A SE move would OHKO regardless.
Avalugg is a one trick pony, Avalanche and Recover Spinning, one trick ponies don't go very far in the meta, see a much better one trick pony Typhlosion.
He will see usage in NU, maybe RU. Its totally outclassed and overpowered in UU and up
