Well, I wasn't using the thing for much, but then I got to Blaine's gym. My heavy hitters at the time were Venusaur, Beedrill, and a Pikachu that was a move or two short of being ready to turn into Raichu (a Raichu that later single handedly saved me from defeat multiple times in the E4/Champion battles later on and cemented Raichu's place as one of my all time favorite Pokemon, but that's another story).
Well, I wasn't really sure what to do beyond going back and training something up - but then I remembered the Flareon I wasn't really using had Dig on it, for reasons I don't remember.
To make a long story short, Dig combined with Flash Fire won the Gym and made Flareon my favorite Eeveelution for as long as there isn't a Bug or Rock type one.
