Do you remember the catching tutorial in R/S? Remember how your dad gives you some pokeballs and a little sick kid comes by to help you out? He catches a level 5 ralts and moves to a city with cleaner air.

You run into him again in Mauville where he battles you again with a level 17 ralts and loses handily. He then lives in verdenturf town or whatever until you beat your dad and get surf from Wallys parents, then he runs away from home and you can't find him until you beat victory road where he comes to you with a team full of NU shit mons and loses handily again.

naw, steve is just the champion. He could be seen as a rival in Emerald though, when he isn't champ and Wally or whatever is, but you only battle Steve once in Emerald(but you do battle with him at the space town)

Having replayed Emerald just last week (Getting Legendaries from every past game to move up via Pokebank in December) I forgot just how little Wally mattered overall. I remembered that quitting shithead Brendan and vaguely remembered Wally being a sickly kid turned badass and fighting you at the end of the game.

Turns out he's a sickly kid with a male Gardevoir who you fight exactly twice in the game. He fucking sucks and could have been removed from the game entirely without detracting from it.

Think really hard about when you got through victory road in R/S. He's at the very end of it, right when you can see the exit he appears and you have one last battle with him. (Although, you can have rematches with him)

they're all NU shitmons now, and they were still pretty shitty back then. R/S was definitely the generation where a lot of pokemon were viable just because everything sucked really bad. Even salamence sucked ass.

I hope they do a Hoenn sequel that's a few years after RSE so he's actually the same age as yuor player character and IS your rival, but his motivation isn't to best you, it's "to become better than 'him'..." from long ago, which turns out to be Brendan as Hoenn Pokemon League Champion

He HAS a gardevoir from the start but starts off using the starter opposite yours, which he got as an Egg from May

Only real Rivals were Blue, Silver, Barry, Cheren, Hugh, and Calem/Serena.

May still exists in some form as Birch's kid if we choose Brendan. The same is true for Lyra, Dawn, Hilda, Rosa, and Serena.

Only Leaf goes poof when her male counterpart is picked. Kris also went poof, but she's been double erased by Lyra replacing her in the remakes.
