Glad you asked! They're extremely rare variations of pokemon with different color pallets. There's about a 1/8000 chance of encountering them in the wild randomly without any RNG manipulation or methods that increase your chance of encountering one, so it isn't uncommon for some players to have never seen one before despite having played one or more games.

The most common methods are the Masuda Method, Shiny Fishing, and PokeRadar Chaining, however there seems to be a higher chance of finding shinies in the Friend Safari as well. The three aforementioned methods are covered in the guides section in OP.
>What's the Masuda Method?
Named after Junichi Masuda, one of Diamond/Pearl's developers, programmed a little something special into the games that increases the shiny rate when breeding under certain conditions. Simply, a pokemon traded from a foreign country should be breeded with a pokemon from your cartridge. This increases the rate of an egg containing a shiny by 4x in DPPt (1/2048), and 5x in later games (1/1638). See the guide in OP for more details.
>Can I just soft reset on my eggs if they don't yield any shinies?
Unfortunately, no. When the daycare man from daycare land gives you an egg, a pokemon and it's stats are tied permanently to that egg upon receiving it, including shininess. If you hatch the same egg over and over again by soft resetting, it will yield the same pokemon it did that last time. You can, if you still want to save box space, save before you get any eggs and soft reset if your newly collected haul doesn't yield anything. You'll only have to recollect the eggs again after soft resetting.

There's no significant advantage over boxing eggs and using the coin trick on lumiose as it will still require you to go back to a pokemon center, press A when an egg hatches, and go back to the center when you hatch everything. The time you spend waiting for eggs to be laid, just to end up boxing them and hatching them later, is also valuable time you could be using to hatch simulataneously. TL;DR: Get eggs as they're laid, box pokemon as they're hatched, stay on route 7. Riding around waiting for eggs to lay is time you could also be using to hatch.

The majority of /vp/ thinks that this is true, but there hasn't been a datamine of the X/Y ROMs so nobody can say what the probability is for sure. It appears to be on par with the Masuda Method's probability of 1/1638. In addition, pokemon found in the safari will always have two maxed out IVs and have a chance at having a hidden ability, unlike chaining (see below). It should be noted that you aren't allowed to use the Pokeradar in the friend safari, so chaining isn't an option there.

See the GFShinyGuide link in OP. While far easier to find and catch than with the other methods, the pool of available pokemon attainable from fishing is small, and because they much easier to catch, they aren't valued as high as other non-fishable shiny pokemon. Don't fret, you can usually throw a fishing shiny up on the GTS and get most any non-shiny pokemon for it including legendaries if some poor shmuck who doesn't know their worth falls for it. No hard shiny to normal fish ratios yet, but a rough estimate brings it around 1/200 at maximum probability. It should be noted that the mechanics of shiny fishing aren't entirely understood

Serebii confirmed in his update that the chance now is 1/4096.

Earlier on today he had that Matsuda Method cut that number by 50% but he's removed it now.

It mostly depends on your preference and what you want out of a shiny. MMing is the obvious choice if you're planning on building a competitive team with you shiny, since it allows you to have influence over nature, ability, and IVs. Safari hunting is the next best choice if you don't want to spend weeks MMing but still want a specific pokemon with some guaranteed stats and the chance at a hidden ability. Fish chaining is a good choice if you just want a shiny to boast about or use as trade fodder as they're the easiest to catch. Pokeradar chaining comes in at the bottom with it being hard to do and not guaranteeing much else besides a higher probability and getting a specific pokemon. It would seem this is only useful if you can't find the pokemon you want in a safari, don't want to spend loads of time MMing, don't particularly care about IVs/Nature/Ability, and are good at keeping a chain alive.

I wish my MMing luck was as good as my IV breeding luck.
I had a bunch of 5IV sandshrews I bred previously, then recently I realized I wanted to breed Counter onto it. I asked a friend that had the safari to catch me a male Impish Riolu, preferably with at least perfect HP and Def. First one they found was male, had synchronized the Impish, and had perfect HP, Def, and SpD. Then I bred it with my 5 IV sandshrew and the very first one I hatched had 31/31/31/xx/31/31.

Meanwhile I've passed 2,000 eggs in my MM attempt, and now I learn that the chance for a shiny may be even greater than the 1/1365 that I previously assumed.

I battled a friend to see my number of eggs hatched, then subtracted a generous 200 from that because that was probably the most non-MM eggs I hatched. Then I started counting in a text document, reached 1800 and stopped, and have done at least a few hundred since then.

It's awful. Would not recommend to anyone. What's worse is that I already have a perfect IV non-shiny in my box, begging me to train it and drop this hopeless cause, but I CAN'T because I spent TOO MUCH TIME.

Someone brought it up that somewhere confirmed at 20 chained there's 2 perfect IVs and at 40 it's 3, all of the shinies I've chained have either 2 or 3 perfect IVs as well. No idea any official report on that though.

Some random japanese passerby asked to trade with me last night. We traded some random crap and then I gave him the random shiny Fraxure I found a while ago, it was Timid and I hated its stupid face. I thought it might increase my shiny karma for MMing. Nope.
I even gave my couple to a friend who's found over 20 shinies in the hopes his good luck would help, he hatched a box but still nope.

Nobody, not even Serebii knows/can confirm what the MM rate is for gen 6. My guess is that it's been lowered to 2x to compensate for the high wild encounter probability and is now the old DPPt MM rate.

I got a shiny in 9 boxes, and I gave my friend breeders for Furfrou and she got one in 11? eggs... I know some people have taken 20+ boxes, but that's just plain bad luck.

I mean, 1/4000 still isn't "high" at all, so I don't see why they'd making breeding a shiny harder.

I don't think you're the guy who was asking for a ponyta. Really it's not that hard to get 5IV japanese things on the gts if you just do a few searches for level 1 males in the egg group you want, search for a region that's not yours and trade for the ones that say 5V that aren't asking for legendaries.

As long as the mamoswine is the male, yeah. You have a slightly lower chance of it producing an egg every time it does a check to see if an egg is produced (70% when same species-different OT, 50% when different species-different OT, both boosted by +20% with oval charm) but usually you hatch eggs slower than eggs are produced anyway.

I'm not sure if I want to trade it, but I have a shiny Venipede. After using the 5 IV and 6 IV Venipede/Scolipede as parents, I got it. It was the 6th egg, actually. I wasn't lucky enough to get Speed Boost, which pissed me off, and it only has IVs in Attack, something else and Speed, which is definitely usable but fuck Swarm. It's Adamant, which is why I wanted SB.

Should I fit it in to my competitive team, maybe as support (It has Toxic Spikes/Spikes)? It's easily one of my favourite Pokémon.

You should trade for whatever you think is worth it. Personally I hate not being able to rename a shiny so I don't care for other OTs, but whatever floats your boat. If you really want an answer, attack is pretty worthless on an eevee, the most used eeveelutions need SpA, and the lack of Spd is pretty rough.

Alright guys. After going through shiny threads for the past few days, I've noticed something.

/vp/ is finicky as fuck when it comes to what a "good" shiny is. Barring stats of course, it seems like the only thing people want is something that is either pink, cyan, or black. Apparently nothing else even exists on the radar.

So just to get a clear set of info, what do you guys consider a good shiny? I ask this in purely the aesthetics department, we all know you want 31 IV's in every stat, even in the nonexistent ones.

I consider shinies that look GOOD, good shinies, or if they're one of my favorite pokemon.
When I say good I mean not GREEN SLIGHTLY, barely noticeable, colors that make the pokemon look like shit.

I found cyan and blue to be too close together, and saw more occurrences of it coming up, so I just rolled with it. However you're right about white, I forgot about it. Not sure about the green though, I guess Espeon but that's all I can think of.

Well, obviously you want the best Pokemon you can get - if you're MMing - so natures/abilites play into it a lot, especially if you're one of those poor guys that MM Froakies.

Personally, a "good" shiny is one that looks better than it's normal counterpart. This is why I love Goodra as a shiny (I find the gold/peach/purple much cuter). However, I also want a shiny I can use semi-competitively. That's why I MM'd, so I can get the nature/IVs. Some people just like to collect shinies though, like the Vivillion guys.

A rubbish shiny is something like Garchomp, but shiny M-Garchomp looks goddamned fabulous.

I don't think it's the best method but it can work. The thing is your odds are like finding pokemon in the wild and I guess you divide it by 5 assuming you can keep running into the same horde

its still a 1/9999 chance of a particular egg matching a particular person.
For example, say your egg had a SV(shiny value) of 894. You would have to find a person with a trainer shiny value of 894. It may not seem difficult, but it actually is.
The only advantage Instacheck shinies have is that they can have great IVs

Actually I've gotten 4 shinys today. All perfect 5iv. Its not hard at all when there are thousands of other people doing this. And its not 1/9999. Its more of 1/4092, since the highest found shiny value so far has been 4091.
