Think about it like this: it seems to me that Kris and May both embody a sort of idyllic-girl sort of feel, like Sugimori was being a little bullheadded and felt like he could go wild and crazy on the designs and made characters with honestly ridiculous outfits (not in the sense of practicality, but just the way they looked. Those clothes are clothes you just simply don't see on people in real life, whereas the clothes on Hilda, Rosa (yes I know she was made by another artist), and Serena are more like something you might see in real life (especially Serena). Kris and May both look like incredibly athletic, bubbly, intelligent, charismatic, charming, and honestly 11/10-would=bang hot girls. Literally designed to be perfect, yet with each a unique flair. You could almost say they look like they have personality. Lyra, Hilda, Rosa, and Serena are all just... different in a sense.
I really hope I got this point through because I'm shit at explaining abstract concepts to other people.
