Bulbasaur because starts as dual-type and is easiest to train into a beast
Squirtle because stats make a huge leap once evolved

All the grass starters.

Bulbasaur rules competitively and the Mega Evolution is an incredible tank.
Chikorita has a perfectly executed evolution line.
Treecko has the coolest second evolution stage ever.
Turtwig's final evolution is the most badass starter stage.
The Snivy line is one of the best things about Gen 5.
The Chespin line is super cute and creative.
