That's because for once people are actually busy playing the game rather than drawing.

Also the general consensus in Japan is that the character designs are really good this time, so a lot of artists are busy working on doujinshi for upcoming Comiket.

I liked the designs for some of the gym leaders quite a bit, but they weren't as involved with the player as gym leaders have been in past games.

I loved Clemont's gym with the pokequiz.

Shame most of them have no personality. I would love to interact with them more cause they have really interesting designs.

Well, in the beginning of every series, some gym leader didn't have a personality or involve to plot. But every time there were some leader looks awesome by thier designs.

Basically this. People don't understand the amount of work that 3D took. They have 7XX pokémons with many amazing multiple animations, plus the many more Amie animations. Not to mention doing all those 3D models, and don't forget the textures. Shinies, megas, forms, etc, etc.

It's not just the Gym Leaders, the Team Flare scientists minus Xerosic (and Lysandre) have no real personality and they all feel interchangeable apart from the one who keeps saying "We're so lame", whichever one that is... I hope the next game gives the characters more, well, character.

When trainer customization was first confirmed, I was expecting costumes like these. The closest X/Y got was the Pangoro hat in post-game. Hopefully that becomes reality in the next main Pokemon game.
