Generation 1 has become the Evangelion/Ocarina of Time of the Pokemon series, in that people distance themselves from it only because of seemingly nostalgia blinded opinions on the game.

In truth, it's probably the best in the series in terms of progression, design, Pokemon design and even subtle story and world-building.
