It makes no sense when you consider that plenty of in-game trainers do it and Pokemon with multiple formes are practically begging for it.

Go into the game and try to make a team with multiples of the same Pokemon.

When you get into a battle (not with the same Pokemon mind), watch as it tells you to select only 3 of them to use.
