My first ever shiny was in LeafGreen and it was a fucking magikarp (not even joking) still caught it though. Second shiny was an onix in Ruby. Not caught a single shiny since and that was about 4-5 years ago

I caught a tangela spending maybe about 10 minutes grinding.

I've also spent maybe two hours grinding in a dragon safari with nothing. Guess it all depends.

Here's a pic of the shiny Mawile I got last night. Sadly, it's got poor IVs (31 hp/sp.atk) but I guess that's how shinies go, right? Caught last night in an unplanned wake up in the middle of the night safari farming session.

Still on the quest for shiny gligs. Added a bunch of shinies to my collection the past few days, including a 5iv honedge, 2 iv noibat, 3iv seviper, 2 iv froakie (torrent sadly), and a 2iv fraxure. Today I got a goldeen for a garchomp (fishing I know but garchomp isn't tough to find so it was worth it), and a 2iv emolga for an umbreon on the gts.

pic related: it's my shiny team so far. Tried to make it as even as possible coverage-wise while still consisting of shinies I like and fit the look visually. Any feedback on the team comp or aesthetics would be much appreciated!

on the off chance you are completely out of the loop, bring along a pokemon with the sweet scent move to attract hordes, and a fainted *insert desired nature here* synchronize ability pokemon (ralts/abra/etc) in the first slot to give you a 50% chance of your preferred nature as opposed to 1/24.

I was thinking of asking this as well.

Personally I like hatching my own shinies - I really enjoy breeding and being pleasantly surprised when that shiny pops out, even if it takes forever or doesn't happen at all. I like them to have my OT. So I probably would never use instacheck.

That said, it doesn't bother me that others use it. I feel like it doesn't devalue shinies as much as people make it out to.

This all the way. Personally, I don't see why people even bother trading for shinies. To me, the whole appeal of shinies is knowing that you were the one who caught it. Then, using a shit IV'd pokemon in battle means you're playing hard mode. lmao

Fair enough, follow up question then. If you really like being the OT, would you ever consider using instacheck to take a peek and see if the egg is shiny (by comparing the egg SV to your own SV), and then only bothering to hatch the shiny eggs, or would you still feel like its cheating the process?

That's kind of a dilemma for me. I don't hunt for shinies by hatching (the process of curating for the highest total IV pokemon is OCD enough --- the added pressure of hoping for a nice IV shiny seems beyond crazy to me). I don't go out of my way to find them unless I want a special pokemon to complete my team. The dedication to finding shinies between people varies a great deal I think. lol

You could trade them away like any other bred mon, if there are others who are interested in them. Or you could throw them up on pokebank once that comes out and probably even forget about them for a bit before you ever have to worry about space (and maybe even just get a new bank account and let the eggs rot, depending on how the system works).

I don't know, I've always seen the actual hatching as the longest part, and it seems like this could cut out that step entirely. Just wondering what people thought about that lol

Well through WT I managed to obtain not one but two 4IV mons, a contrary Inkay and an infiltrator Litwick.

I really enjoy breeding for nature/IVs, though team building is a little difficult for me.

Right now, a bulbasaur. Going for quiet with at least 3-4IVs. I'm not too crazy about having penta/hexaperfects... yet.

Next is quagsire, and the team i have in mind is finished. I'm really not looking forward to chain breeding the egg moves onto wooper myself though.

This may be a stupid comparison, but I imagine it's like climbing a mountain, and even though you can't quite see the top, you know that you must be past halfway up, so stopping now would be a logically bad decision.

Of course, that comparison isn't entirely true I guess, because of RNG, and the fact that the height of the mountain isn't constantly changing as he climbs. So yeah, I guess he's crazy.

It's only broken when you reel in too fast, don't get a nibble, or catch/kill a pokemon. You can run from anything to find a shiny.

It could've turned out horrifyingly wrong, though. Out of how tired I was, I could've deleted it along with the males with the bad IVs and lack of Infiltrator and saved afterwards. It would've been better to Wonder Trade them if that was the case, but I was running out of room.

It's my fault really
Some guy had his shiny gengar up for trade and I offered my charmeleon and he accepted, as we got in a trade he puts up a gengar, but I was not able to recognize that it was not shiny and he just goes his merry way with my charmeleon.

I'm not really color blind but I need a comparison to tell the difference between shiny and normal gengar

Damn that sucks. Gengar is actually almost impossible to tell if it's a shiny outside of its Mega form, so it was a risky trade to begin with. Ahh well. I don't actually agree with Insacheck shinies, but in your case, i'm glad you got some Karma out of being so trusting.

It's a Gen6 Shiny, which means it'll hold more value then other Shinies that'll be devalued immensely when Pokebank goes online.

Of course Shinies in general are on the decline, but it's a good bargaining chip if you ever needed something like Pokerus or a Ditto.

That's assuming that hacked shinies can still get through via Bank.But yeah, I see what you mean. It's very likely that only Gen 6 shinies will hold any "trade value" quote on quote, because many people will avoid trading Gen 1 - 5 Pokemon out of fear of receiving a hacked Pokemon.

I almost always check the Summary before trading. You can't always tell the colors apart, but you can definitely see the Red star in the Pokemon's Summary.
