Which one/s should I get? What's changed/new?

PS: I don't have RL friends that are open to pokemon games.

Mechanics are a lot better. Each attack is either physical or special now. If your Pokemon has a higher attack stat use Physical moves. If they have a higher Special Attack use Special moves. Someone always says it too late so I wanted to get that out of the way first.

In general not too much has changed. There's a lot of Pokemon you'll be unfamiliar with. Like Gen V which had 160 new Pokemon. Mega evolution is a new feature which is like an in battle form change. Fairy is a new type, it's super effective against Dragon, Dark, and Fighting. Resists bug, fighting, and dark. Immune to Dragon. Weak to Poison and Steel. It's a decent type, kind of cutesy but there's always been Pokemon like that.

IMO the best places to start are FRLG or vanilla BW.
Then BW2, and XY.
Emerald is one of my personal favourites but people shit on hoenn a lot so I can understand if you don't wanna go there.
HGSS are nice remakes but with XY and BW they don't hold up as well as they should.
Sinnoh games are all ass. If you reeeeally want to play a sinnoh game play platinum.

There have been a lot of changes since Ruby, but one that you will probably notice right away upon hopping onto XY would be that the physical and special attack system has been split and no longer does a move's type determine whether or not the move will be physical or special (there are psychic type moves that are now physical and fighting type moves that are now special for example).

Also TMs are now infinitely reusable like HMs unlike prior gens where you can only use a TM once.

No reason not to hop on to XY, and the other posts in this thread cover the changes. But as for other games you might want to play,

FireRed/LeafGreen are good remakes of Red/Blue
Emerald is good third version of Ruby Sapphire
Platinum is the only good Sinnoh game
HeartGold/SoulSilver are good remakes of Gold/Silver, with the new stuff that Crystal added also present
Black/White are cool
Black 2/White 2 are sequels to Black/White

Are the remakes worth it if I've played the originals?
In what way is BW2 a sequel? Can you continue the game using your pokemon from BW?

Yeah, I would say that the remakes are all very worth it.

And BW2, no, won't let you use the same Pokemon from BW, you play a different protag. It's set in the same region as BW, a few years after. So the story and stuff kind of follows up on BW.

I'd say get XY for what you're looking for. Can always check out the games you missed later.
