Ok guys so Im replaying All the pokemon games back to back and Im finishing Platinum.

Holy Shit Barry isnt that bad of a Rival as I remembered.

I mean he is a bit on the annoying in a what the fuck are you doing sort of guy, but he does feel like a challenge. He feels like a rival.

RSE May/Brendan/Wally were a fucking Joke. They had no presence at all.

Cheren sucked for the most part, he wasnt the worst rival, but he was kinda there. It also did not helped that he shared screen time with Bianca, one of the worst rivals in the series. After the no rival of RSE and the groupies of XY.

Oh and Hugh is so forgettable that I had to add this line after I originally wrote all of this.

A rival IMO, has to share similar goals.

To be the Champ, to be the best that no one ever was. Thats what a rival should be. In that sense Blue, Barry, Silver and Cheren are perfect rivals.

Sadly for Cheren he had to share the spot light with Bianca and Cheren was a bit too philosophical for my taste.

I would have just let Cheren be the rival and Bianca the obligatory Professor's pet. And make Cheren a bit more witty to showcase how smart he is.

Obviously RSE had no rival and XY had to many so called Rivals, but they were to damn weak to even pose a challenge.

The only thing about RSE that makes it better than XY IMO was that Wally at least had a competent team, if only HE had been a real rival and was developed better.

Hugh was not even a rival he was more of a side character that was also your friend and got a pokemon at the same time that you. He did not share your goal of being the very best.

And the reason I placed Barry over Silver, wich btw until recently I put Silver over Barry, was for the fact that he acted like a rival and Silver was more of a dick for no real reason. You could say Silver was the 90s anti-hero of Pokemon.

Also Barry's team is much much better than Silver's and thats not counting the Battleground Barry. Thats post game.

Of course Blue has to be on top because lets face it. He is a true rival. He was you're childhood friend but let the ego of being strong and you had to prove him that you are better than him.

He pulled the biggest upset by being Champ before you, this asshole was always one step ahead of you until the end. If that doesnt make him a rival idk what else can be.

Quite honestly, he IS one of the best. Character development, a semi-competent team (nigga had a heracross, roserade, snorlax, and staraptor), and he wasn't that annoying.
Blue wasn't that bad, Silver was a fucking terrible rival, Gen 3 was the worst. Gen 5.1 was mediocre leaning towards the negative side, and gen 5.2 was "MUH PURRLOIN" all the way to the end.

Why can't we have rivals like these guys anymore? A full team of six, pre-league in Silver's case. I'm not asking for another Blue, but come on. Another Barry is hardly difficult to pull off.

On a side note, I'm missing Shinnoh a lot lately. The region was actually very diverse and had a lot of exploration, even if the game was slow as fuck and the designs were subpar.

What I don't get is the Cheren/Bianca hate. They were easily "group of friends" done right, something XY failed miserably at trying to imitate.

As for Hugh, I liked him as a character, but he was much more a friend than any rival.

The PC is supposed to be a genius at training pokemon. Everyone else has trouble keeping a team of pokemon happy and obedient. The player doesn't.

I agree to an extent. One thing Gen IV did well with its legendaries was giving most of them a backstory and some lore. And even the ones that didn't have it, like Heatran, had some redeeming qualities, like subquests. Giratina was eerie as fuck in D/P.

That's your headcanon, though. In the games, which is the medium we're talking about, there a re very few trainers with full teams. In fact, in X and Y, there are only TWO trainers with a full team that doesn't consist of Magikarp: Diantha and your rival. That's it.

The Mega Stones felt so out of place in a generation I OVA. It was obvious the OVA was a simple cash in to sell Pokemon X/Y to an older audience.
