That's what I was thinking. Consumed with trying to win, they join the opposing team for a chance to access really strong Pokemon. After they get stomped again, they go through a period of struggle trying to piece together what they were doing wrong, and then finding a new understanding. Like if Serena just went full Silver trying to beat you before simmering back down.

They kind of did this with Barry. He got an inferiority complex for part of the game, but he grew out of it. His development is easily one of the best things the franchise has done.
