I was fully aware of EVs, IVs, Natures, movesets, competitive play, Secret IDs, goddamn Feebas tile bullcrap, etc. back in Gen 3, but I barely skimmed that stuff until Gen 5 came around (and even then, that was just so I had a barely competitive-viable team for fighting with friends or at local events). I did have a few Pokemon in Gen 3 with Smogonsets, though.
Honestly, what was more interesting was that I was the only person in my circle that even knew the Regis existed. I also milked those Feebas within my circle quite a bit...
I'm deep into it all with X/Y, but mainly because it's just so accessible now.
