It doesn't matter what I use. The plot is what calls that shots.

I need to make the battle as important and life changing as possible to trick the plot into thinking that a win for Ash would change his character. If I do that then I'm guaranteed to win no matter what, even if I use a single Sunkern.

Pikachu and Charizard have defeated Legendaries when the writers wanted them to do so. Your team doesn't mean jack shit if you're not the rival fighting him before the league or the Ritchie/Tobias/Cameron of the season.

Different Scenario all together, with Red having caught more Pokemon and wearing Brock down by basically sacrificing most of them, and Ash only really having Pikachu and Butterfree.
It's also no fair to say by comparing the beginning strength, you can compare the end.

Ash and Origins Red are no different in a 6 vs 6 battle. They have the same kind of plot armor and both have the ability to win battle despite type disadvantages just because they "believe in their Pokemon." Your chances against them are equal.

If we're talking Origins Red (since we've all beat game Red already) then both he and Ash will wind up with the battle down to our last Pokémon. I'll go with Charizard for both, in which case as long as no Rock types are used before Charizard Stealth Rock will do most of the work for me.
