Right, So, I redid the Eucalyptus tree sprite/tileset piece to make it look more "Pokemon game-ish". I felt like the originally posted tree made by Bigro didn't quite fit the surroundings - not that it was bad by any means. Opinions? Thoughts?

Eh... Probably, even though I'm a tripfag myself, I see a problem that, people tend not to reply to sprites, artwork, ideas or concepts with constructive critisicm but rather bash things, reply to shitposts/things that aren't related to the project and people end up getting all defensive and shit when their stuff is bashed. Care to explain how it could be improved?

(apart from saying make it look more like a eucalyptus because I don't know how to with just that - tell me where there should be more spaces, less leaves, where to color should change (lightened the color up a bit, pic related) or perhaps draw out a rough so that someone could base off - anything specifically I can take in/out

I think the issue is it's too thick, like an oak. The trunk should be thinner and the leaves start higher up.

What's the issue with them? The idea behind them was that since we're not limited to colors in RPGMaker, I was trying to make the orb look like it's cloudy on the inside, like it could be flowing around in there. The first orb I think I achieved that... the second orb I'm having a lot of trouble with.

This is what your trying to imitate perhaps a reference will help looks pretty good though, but as others have said you can see that the leaves don't start until higher in the tree.

Typically fossils are opposite each other, like Bastiodon and Rampardos.

So the glass cannon idea makes sense. Its total opposite to the bulky support.

As for a third, I'd say a cave painting Pok?mon would be nice.

Could we make it so that not every gym is 100% linear? Remember in RBY you could, after a certain point, choose like 3 gyms to do in any order depending on how you were adventuring?

I also dislike matching a dino and a megafauna mammal since it has always been pairs. Shelled Water creatures, dinosaurs, only the third fossil mixes things up.

Honestly! I'm telling the truth (even though there's no way for me to prove or convince you otherwise), I am ( I guess what you would call) a beginner - I've only made several sprites (that look at least somewhat pleasing for the- 2 Dyngheist ones, 2 Box jellyfish Pokemon ones (and 2 shiny versions for each one), 2 Box jellyfish pre evos (also with 2 shiny versions for each one) and multiple re spriting/edits of my Eucalyptus tree. To be honest, they aren't even that good.

Actually, reading through what I wrote, I guess you could say I have some experience? Perhaps it's one of my unexplored strong points? Fuck it, I'm gonna just say I've got a pretty good grip on spriting now - you were right anon, I was bullshiting.

I liked the Rock/Poison fossil idea based off the world's oldest fossil, found in Western Australia.

Also a one-stage false legendary Thylacine encountered as a once-off in Tassie a la DPP Rotom sounds sweet.

Yeah, agreeing with Thylacine being a one-off.

Regarding the eucalyptus, I think the main issue is colour, actually! The ones shown so far have very European colours - rich brown, bright, light green. Eucalyptus has an almost silvery-grey sheen - the trunks can be almost white, and the leaves are silvery grey-green.

I think it'd be interesting if the player encounters references to the rainbow serpent through the game, and gets told the different stories by the people living in the areas when they progress through the game, maybe the player could encounter it at some stage, legendary snake would be pretty cool

Speaking of story, I'll repost ideas for the main story ideas that the anon (Nepheronia) came up with (of the Minka Bird (He named Yominka)):

The design is pretty neat overall, I just think there's a missed opportunity to work actual petrified wood into the design. Rock/Grass petrified wood is too good to not be a thing and I'd be a little disappointed to see it not integrated into the sloth's design somehow.

The mushrooms are pretty cool overall, though I think the one on his head looks a bit derpy.

To be honest it's a combination between a Dingo and a Thylacine (leaning more towards Dingo though) - it's got elements of both (face shape, habitat, description and body size for Dingo elements and Strong Jaw ability, Large outer jaws referencing jaw strength, stripes for Tylacine elements).

The evo should be looking at the player and not away. Also, the tail seems sort of odd since you're mixing light and dark pixels. From far away, it doesn't quite looks like it's completely filled in because of it. The outmost line on the tail seems a bit too straight compared to the inner line, making it seem to get thinner almost suddenly, rather than gradual. I'd say follow the pixels on the inner side of the line exactly to make them curl at the same pace/pixel space.

Considering it's mostly black and white, using up all 16 colours for it seems odd. I guess most of it went to the orb, though. I still think it's possible they could be simplified even further, especially with you 'dithering' the linework; However, this part is more personal preference!

I feel that the white and gray parts take up too many colours. Together, you have 7, if not more since I'm only colour picking with paint really quickly. I feel as though you could recycle the grays more.

Well, moving the pupil made quite an improvement on its own. The tail still seems to be 'spotty' due to the dithered linework (colours and too different from each other).

I wouldn't say being colourblind is a problem, but it would definitely be a hindrance, haha. I hope you're good at math!

Names need to be more punny (can't help you there, I suck at naming too...) and I agree, the third evo needs some switching up. The 4 purple spikes are too big (same with the whole tail) and more emphasis on the duke/earl would be interesting - at now, it looks like a thief of some kind. I didn't know how "sunny" would work since that was kind of what clear sky implied. Sunny is more of a description of a nice clear day. Unless it's just really hot I guess.

I like rain and fog idea. I could change cloudy to fog and clear sky to rain or sun shower (instead of storm).

Nah, the spikes need to be removed completely. They had much less meaning being there on the tail than these tubes do; it just looked silly.

If the tail on this one were made to look more like a generator it'd be great, imo (without looking like the generator-tails reshiram and zekrom have).

I'd also like to see the stripes on the prevos redone so they don't look so random. I like how the final stage looks like it's kind of wearing a jacket.

Despite it only being attributed to one gender, I don't think the world will turn over if both are poison.

If anything, if you like the generator idea, I'd say work it int he tail better. The tubes look like hed be able to strangle himself and look far too large for hydro-dynamics and look bulky and.. catchable on things.

Water/Electric is an odd fit for a starter, tbqh. I'd try to make secondary typings something that has no relation to the original typings: Electric is resisted by Water. Also makes it impossible to do a proper secondary circle but that's just a personal preference.

That zig-zag line on the eastern side of 1F is some kind of barrier which can only be deactivated by having something on the button in B1F. Hence why the massive puzzle is a thing.

Back on subject of a rough game plot. Looking at the forums, a lot of it is pretty bleh. I don't think both evil teams (If we have 2) should just be rehashes of Magma/Aqua(/Rocket) but with a Technology vs Nature theme instead. I like the idea of a leader who was a former scientist working to find solutions to prevent human interference with nature - stop pollution/atmosphere destruction but then going batshit insane.I also like the idea of having a team seem evil when they really are just trying to save everyone's lives but having one of the two rival characters be the true villain (should be more subtle though).We need more Dreamtime/Dreaming based ideas in my opinion.

You're finding patterns in pokemon that don't necessarily hold true. Remember when the grass starters were 'meant' to be reptilian?
Either way, I've satisfied the criteria, it can travel on land through a variety of means.
It could use the fins as an anchor, it could walk normally. Since it's psychic, it can probably levitate.

Failing that, you can pull a spoink and have it balance on it's tail. Your limit is literally how far you're willing to think about it.

In terms of starters, I've always really wanted a reverse super-effective circle. We haven't gotten that yet, and it would make each starter completely compatible against each other.

You're getting there. The thorny devil is the main offender of being in that generic stylization (not that it's bad, but the style shouldn't obstruct the concept. It has a bad case of dragonface that is what borked up a lot of gen/vp/ designs).

Elephant Seal: Water/Ground, Water/Rock, or Water/Fighting

First form: Cute little round-headed seal, two front legs look like elephant feet, back two legs are stubby and hidden beneath a large tail-fin.

Second form: Bigger, hind legs have grown as has the snout. Tail fin remains large. Tusks begin to form.

Third form: Huge, bulky. Fully formed elephant legs, head of the seal/walrus. Huge tusks. Tail-fin grows spikes on top, and it's clearly used for slamming downward.

This Pokemon will be a bulky with monstrous offense, but poor on the special side.

I personally think that the grass starter should be based on the thorny devil. A lot of plants have thorns, so it makes sense. Mixing it with a cactus would be a great idea.

And I just feel like the tasmanian devil could be a great inspiration for the fire starter. We could try switching them just to see if it looks better that way.

So I'm drawing up a concept layout for the Safari Zone. I've based if off the area surrounding Snake Hole Waterhole in Northern Queensland, and it contains five biomes:

1. Jungle
2. Desert
3. Lake
4. Semi-Arid
5. Grassland

For the desert biome, should there be some kind of desert-ish grass (like Spinifex)? Or should it be like the Gen 5 games, where there's squishy sand that behaves like tall grass where you can encounter mons?

Pretty much the point of making the dex, to see how it all looks. I think personally the Djangguwul trio could go, I just saw them mentioned a couple of times so included them for reference and to see if others felt the same as I do regarding too many legendaries. Cutting just them alone would bring it back to 9. The Poison Trio also potentially doesn't need a triomaster at all, since, it's not particularly famed as an Australian or deadly beast.

One more question.

Where's the tile for the bottom edge of a body of water? Based off of pic related, there should be a very thin visible brown edge between water and grassy terrain, but none of the tiles available in the thing have this particular edge.

My opinions:
Starters are looking good but could use some work, and definitely should be open to more ideas since they're essentially the defining Pokemon of any generation.

Galah's and Cockatoos look extraordinarily similar, I'd go with one or the other since we have so many birds as is. Besides, we don't need four Normal/Flying birds.

I'd go Roadkill Numbat over Bandicoot -> Numbat, but keep the Bandicoot.

Four regional bugs? I must have missed something.

Rock/Fighting Kangaroo has my vote.

If we have to take Platypus out of the starters, I wouldn't mind a Grass/Poison one in the dex.

Koala pair has my full support as you know from my sprites. I'd LOVE to see a shared evolution for them. Too bad Brisbane has been gone.

Ice/Fire comet thing? What?

Gumnut Cluster/Eucalypt has my support if the design is right.

I didn't like Sharpoon, that could be just me.

The ice spiders have my full support, but again, Brisbane is gone.

I don't like the three-type changes for the Yowie/Bunyip/Yaramaradingdong line. This needs adjustment.

We don't have a blobfish design, I don't think. Same with Ned Kelly, and we can make that a character, doesn't need to be a Pokemon.

Pollution fish have my full support, as do the Box Jellyfish, and the octopus if it has a good design.

Cassowary has my support, but we need a better design. I still like the Skarmory evolution idea.

Ghost Dingo has my support.

Psychic -> Psychic -> Psychic/Dragon Skinks have my full support. I absolutely love the concept behind them. The small one clings to it's dream-stone to see the future, the middle one holds it and has a better control over it's perception, and the large one has become one with the stone and doesn't need to see the future to know it. The suggested names were Scrynk (Scry + Skink), Precoguana (Precognition + Iguana), and something else I can't remember.

Djanngwul trio can go.

Keep the venom trio, go with just spiders OR arthropods (Spider, Scorpion, Bee)

I don't know what the other two is but we don't need it. Legendaries need to be limited, since we want to stick to 100.

Keep Rainbow Serpent and Minka Bird that were discussed on the forums, leave a spot open for the pixie.

Add in the Throwing Stick/Boomerang/Triwing idea (glad someone drew my suggestion!)

I'll support the cutting rabbit if we somehow relate it to the rabbit proof fence and that it developed the scissor ears to cut through it.

BRISBANE! If that was you, could you build on your Koala designs and possibly design an evolution that fits both of them? Instead of a split evolution, they'd be split pre-evolutions. It's quite clever. Think Kami and Piccolo.

Some of them are probably just random ones that twigged my memory and weren't ever mentioned again. Some of the mons I lumped together until we decide whether to keep one or both or neither, or added an alternate interpretation to decide on later.

A very few are just things I thought of and because there didn't appear to be an overwhelming desire for any one thing in particular to fill the role I just chucked them in to fill the role. I had seen a few regional bug ideas but nothing solid, so I threw in one of my own that had 3 very Australian bugs in the line, and figured it'd be easy to swap them out if a more cohesive/popular bug design comes along.

What were the original types for Yowie/Bunyip/Whallagullachimichanga? I imagined them as three one-stage but sort of related pokemon, like Electabuzz/Magmar/Jynx of Gen I. So I gave them all Ghost as a secondary typing to back up their legendary/mythical nature without them being actual legendaries.

I saw one mention of a suit-of-armor type pokemon with Mega Launcher or something as an ability representing Ned Kelly, I thought the idea was neat so I just chucked it in for variety and discussion.

Blobfish is one of the most visually identifiable fish in the world and is Australian. Should be in, saw a few mentions of it as well as the old classic of "Sadfish" posted once.

The fossils are all up for discussion, just threw in the ones that seemed to have the most support. A third fossil is a must, in my opinion. We have the oldest fossil in the world man. The oldest in the world! We should capitalise on that.

Other people love Tiddalik frog legendary, and I of course like it a lot. The sun goddess one is one discussed on the forum, forming a lifecycle trio with Prismambi and Yominka.

There's plenty of very australian things that will get missed, don't worry there. The dex, like I say in the image, is just a refresher image for the more popular ideas and how they might fit in together.

Is it goothairy? You don't need art to make a successful proposal. Nepheronia came up with the Tiddalik legendary and it was very popular despite no art to go with it.

You just need a solid concept, and the creativity to express it the way you want it to be seen.

Having art isn't necessarily progression. Both the Rainbow Snake and the Venom Trio have gotten very far without drawings to accompany them.
Granted, they're legendaries and there are special circumstances involved - and I'm not denying that art doesn't help either - it just isn't worth complaining about.

This is an approximation of the hand-drawn map from earlier using the default tileset. I decided to turn the "semi-arid" area into a dirt-tile badland. The conifers look awfully out of place there, though.

No idea. I've seen a few pieces of artwork in the drop box that indicate that someone was scribbling down moth ideas, but honestly, more moths is probably not something needed in Pokemon right now. The jump to the beautiful and radiantly-coloured Christmas Beetle (and the local story of how a fraction of the Rainbow Serpent's own colours shimmer on its shell, as local legends tend to intertwine lots of things) or the devious and nasty mosquito (big fan of the lifestealing thing, loves that Giga Drain, etc etc) makes both these bugs fairly different from the usual regional bugs. For one, no goddamn powders, because they aren't moths or butterflies.

Also, witchetty grubs don't move much, they just sort of pop in a vaguely nutty/egg-like flavour when you bite into them, but the head has some real crunch and a much more distinct nut flavour. They're good, no need to cook them at all.

but yeah the grass one is nice, throw in some cactus like deserty plant bits..
i still think the platypus is best for a water starter the devil fish seems too bland, people just jumped on the 'devil trio' thing and kinda forced the devil fish in there for not much reason....of course not necessarily an electric platypus..

Yeah, putting an item there would make sense. I'll do that.

And yes, that was entirely intentional. Hence, if you look at the house's counterpart on the sketch, it has "secret?" as a sub-note.

So, here's a revised version, with your suggestion incorporated and the middle of the town better spaced-out so it's not horridly crowded.

Here's the doodles, I couldn't think of what to do with the grass starter, turn it into a wolf? I think people said they wanted a fast grass starter.
The fire turned into a sort of dinosaur/dodongo but I thought it was underdesigned and accidentally made it a tyranitar clone.
The water, a psychic manta, but I didn't like it.
An electric platypus.
And the fighting crab I keep pushing.

Part of the reason it's lacking in the grass department is because I want to use an alternative kind of grass (like spinifex) in the semi-arid badlands area, but there's nothing appropriate in the tileset.

I suppose I could fill in some more empty areas in the western half of the map with more grass, though. Thanks for the tip.
