What the hell is up with pokemon? I mean, these two are supposed to be mountain breaking badasses and neither of them breaks 7 foot. And they're too damn light. Nothing in this game adds up How the hell is Wailord, for all his size, LIGHTER than fucking Snorlax? For that matter, how the hell is Steelix, a colossal metal snake lighter than Snorlax? I don't get it, who the hell came up with those numbers and just said 'Fuck it, it'll do'?

Given that it stores them in a pocket dimension, why are Aggron and Tyranitar and their buddies not at least ten feet tall? I mean, even Tyrantrum, the T Rex knockoff is 9 and a bit. It's not like their height stops them being pocketed, look at Wailord and Steelix.

You're missing the fucking POINT.

Pokemon started out as bug catching, right? What's so good about bug catching and fighting? You put them in a little jar and carry them around. But they don't magically grow to Xbox controller size when you take them out; they're still compact. POCKET Monsters are meant to be fairly compact collectible monsters. That's why most designs aren't as complex as they could be (except gen 4 but we all know Gamefreak must have lost a bet or something back then). They're essentially "compacted", "convenient" or, if you prefer, "casual" monsters. They're meant to be portable, simple and fun without infringing on other things. How do we know this? Well, what other monster collecting things have there been which were explicitly designed with the Japanese household in mind?

It's just flavor, like the dex entries. They're neat and all, but they ultimately mean nothing. I imagine they do just pull some of this junk out of their butts. At least the weight values are actually used for moves, but the height values mean squat. The only time they were ever used for anything was the pokemon following thing, where pokemon above a certain height can't go indoors because they're too big. (I'm convinced the Amie is arbitrary and it just gives a double screen to whatever it feels like)

You're flipping wrong. The only thing "pocket" about pokemon IS that they're kept in pokeballs. It was ALWAYS like that. Even before it was "pocket" and instead "capsule" monsters. They can be any flipping size they want, and the design mentality is a whole other story, but I don't think keeping it simple was for the sake of making it "compact".

You are both wrong and not picking up on subtle elements.

It's a double play on the fact that, yes, they go in your pocket in the game, and they are always on a handheld system so they also go in your pocket in real life.

I am aware of that as well, but it would still be irrelevant to the size of the monsters themselves, or their design. Despite graphical limitations, the art itself can be more complicated. This hasn't been an issue for a long time, but the design never had anything to do with facilitating the capabilities of the system, or that it's smaller. You want to know the reason it's simple? It makes it more appealing to a wider audience, that's why. Junk like Digimon just doesn't appeal to everyone. Not everyone is going to like a more realistic or complex design.

This. This always has bothered me. It's like they're afraid to make anything the least bit small or large. I'm pretty sure 95% of all Pokemon are between 1 and 5 feet.

Joltik is one of three Pokemon smaller than 1 foot, the others being Klefki and Flabébé. Even then, it's 4 inches tall, which is huge for a spider.

My head canon: wailords have a body cavity that they can fill with water in order to submerge like a submarine, but it can also fill with air to float
