Card, what are your ideas for a plot? Perhaps combine ideas posted in the threads and forums? As an anon in the previous thread said, I don't think it would be very good to have a rehashed team Magma vs Aqua except with a Nature vs Technology spin instead. I'm thinking of tweaking my idea quite a bit to incorporate dreamtime into it somehow.

Keep it to an evil team that has evil intentions. We don't even need two teams like I've seen discussed.

The rainbow serpent turns humans into Pokemon. The evil team should try to take advantage of that for one reason or another.

The justification for two evil teams was that there are two legendaries with extraordinary power.

How about we be unique in this sense: Instead of one team per legendary, have one team that wants to awaken a particular legendary and in the process awakens both.

Team Evilfuckers wants to stop human intervention. They feel murder is too extreme, so when they realize that the legendary rainbowsnakemon has the ability to turn people into pokemon, they wish to awaken it to do just that.

In the process of awakening the rainbow serpent, they inadvertently awaken the minka bird as well. The minka bird has deadly abilities via its voice and immense destructive power. This unintended consequence screams danger to the whole world.

Well, I don't think turning people into pokemon makes much sense (although that did happen in mystery dungeon and we could reference that) because it's similar to X and Y's ultimate weapon.
I like the Nature vs Technology only as a large corporate trying to provide for the region, but in it's process is destroying the land elsewhere and the legendary calls upon the wild to fight back with earthquakes, floods, all sorts of disasters. The evil corp realizes they're damaging the world with their actions, and so turn to using natural techniques for energy, food, et cetera.
That's what I brought up before.

Problem is, it doesn't make much sense in our region, I guess. The Dreamtime notion fits better, I think, with our legendaries. Make it some sort of capitalizing on a Dream World for humans that becomes a way of controlling or brainwashing its users, and you might have something.

Eh. I'll probably give them a spriting afterwards just to see what works better. I personally prefer the small birds (can't remember what species they were supposed to be) to Lyrebirds though. Mainly because the Kingfishers seem like eevee - except it's bird (I'm not really a huge fan of Pokemon that change their secondary type upon evolution either).

I asked the other day what I could draw some someone suggested a turtle. I did start drawing it but it... didn't quite end up turtle-y. I still leek it, but I'd definitely make some changes to it, especially the headgear.

They have to do something involving the player. Not all of them, but the better ones should.
Giovanni was the villain.
Blue/Gary was your rival.
Jasmine has her ampharos quest.
And a couple of the champions helped you with the legendary pokemon.

Oh, and Pryce has his piloswine. I think it helps if they have a signature pokemon.

I think a big one is Lt.Surge, you're in his residential area (Vermilion city) quite a bit with the S.S. Anne, there's a Pokemon fan club that allows you to get one of those expensive bikes for free, there was a Snorlax blocking a route near the town, the gym was really annoying but simplistic - surprisingly memorable gym puzzle (god damn trash cans and switches), finally, Lt Surge himself - the lightning American who served in a war with his Pokemon. He never left his gym and gave out exposition of any kind and yet, he still left an impact.

Gym Leaders should be more than just gym leaders. They should have another role like the gym leader in BW and it
should effect their role in the story. Skyla was a pilot and she gave you a plane ride. Lenora directs the Museum and
there was the quest to return the stolen skull for her.

I think there should be a good balance between gym leaders who reside in towns with plenty to do (similar to Lt.Surge in Vermilion city (In FR/LG/R/G/B/Y)) and gym leaders who are somewhat active in some sort of subquest/have a role (Like Jasmine (With the sick Ampharos), Clair (Having a pretty stubborn personality and making you go through Dragon's Den for your badge). I wish I could give better examples from newer gens but I can't think of any off top of my head. Interestingly designed gym leaders are also pretty well received (Such as Valerie and Wulfric) even if they don't really have anything going for them plot/personality wise.

I wonder what a Grass/Poison Thorny Devil and a Fire/Dark Tasmanian Devil would look like? I love these but I feel like grass would fit thorny devil better (cactus) and fire would fit tasmanian devil better (temper). I love these though. Really, Devil starters is just so cool.

The trees and rock to the right are distributed far too evenly. In the game it probably won't be noticeable too much, but the gaps between them should be more sporadic in my opinion.

Also the grass is VERY dark, and having bright buildings and tall grass makes it look extremely off. Is there a reason behind this?

I touched up the colours a bit to be more akin to what you'd likely see in Pokemon.

The difference in brightness is an effect to highlight the difference in layers in RPG Maker's construction mode. It will not look like that ingame.

As for the tree spacing, you have a point. The intention was to make the trees gradually thin out between the jungle/creek area and the desert area, but it seems I didn't do that very well. Thanks for pointing that out; I'll see what I can do to fix it.

Because I have an idea for a new weather mechanic: wind.

You could have a breeze changing move that changes the wind level with each use. One usage brings light winds, while the next brings heavy winds.

In light wind:
Grass +50%
Flying -50%

In heavy wind:
The other way around

Better for sure. Only thing that bugs me now is the straight line the right most trees follow. Try lowering the left one of the two further to the bottom left, but only slightly, making the right one kinda isolated.
And perhaps avoid the perfect diamond pattern by moving some or one of the trees slightly.

I'm off now, but it's really just a minor thing that probably only bugs me. Go with your feeling and if you don't mind how it looks now feel free to ignore it.

I think we're getting too crazy with the strict-ness of the pokedex, not to mention there seems to be two discussions going between the threads and on the forum.

Ideally, the best way would be to keep it on the forums, but use the threads here as a kind of update to show the progression of things.

That isn't enough. At least for a pokemon. If ninetails' concept was just "fire fox" it could look like any of pic related. There needs to be more to the concept. All (or most) elements, including size, proportion, body type and markings should rope into the concept and not be there randomly. At least in order for it to look somewhat pokemon.

The reason "grass tassie devil" is not enough is because it leaves too much to the imagination and could wind up looking disastrous. A good base concept needs to be well thought out BEFORE just drawing something. This is how the designers do it; it gives you enough stretching room to be imaginative while still allowing for a smart design.

That is very true, but not how this thread works and has worked (though there are exceptions that still lack art).

Also take the Chelast line. It's just turtles with grass on their shells, possibly with a hint of the island turtle myth, but that doesn't make the visual any more intriguing. I get your point though. However concept ideas aren't as prominent as visual ones and not all artists draw up concepts.

We should work with the devil theme though, if we stick with those three. Like giving them all an (ambiguous) hint of malice or something.

There are lots of imaginative ideas that could develop upon the "grass tasmanian devil" base. It's really up to the designer in this case. If I were to have a shot at it i'd spend a while before actually drawing to bring up some ideas in my head and mold the shape of what it could look like.

Yeah, i'm aware a lot of pokemon designs are literally just "grass rabbit" or whatever. There are a lot of designs and elements in the bland designs however that still hint at being linked with a thought-out concept, and often people don't see it. It's hard to find a pokemon that just has random elements that don't link with a firm base concept.

Anyway, opinions time. It looks bare, and knowing what this is meant to represent, the ocean there should really be made with ocean tiles. I'll hop onto RPGmaker and show you what I mean. On that note, you could have cities being multi-mapped like the safari zone to give them some oomph. I could relatively easily make a random battle 'cafe' simulatory thingy that would fill houses well.

Anyway. Are people more interested in getting scripting and a working first town and route or me getting this tileset done? As it stands I can just use the base tiles I've made myself and the defaults for everything else to be swapped out relatively easily.

tl;dr: tileset or scripting, what more important.

I can't draw or scratch so just think of it conceptually. It's a dark dingoesque dog, the leaf 'bowtie' extends out to be a kind of cape/tail to make it sort of evil for the dark theme.

Yeah, the big garden-thing was just an idea to try and fill in the blank space between the lab/museum/thing and the half-built high-rise without putting in another building. I got the idea from looking at a map of Littleroot Town. I might be able to use the space better, though.

Sup, I drew the Devil Starters bein' posted around.
The Thorny Devil doesn't have fire on its body, it was made to mimic a scorpion tail + his thorns because of the fire/poison proposal.
It's also made to look like blown glass, but that wasn't conveyed too well.

Well, as far as I see, if we want to get a good design down, figuring out concepts for the starters would help a bit, like Tasleaf using its leaves as a camouflage to be an ambush hunter.

I personally was assuming that the thorny devil dude used its spikes and its fire to protect itself, rather than purely for hunting purposes.

Lamoby looks great right now as a first stage for its line, but figuring out what it does with it's psychic powers beyond floating itself would help a bit, I think.

I'm trying to convert my Victory Road sketches into RPG Maker maps now, but I've run into a problem.

Strength-able rocks aren't in the Cave and Dungeon tilesets. They're in the Outdoor tileset. And I can't figure out how to put something from the Outdoor tileset into a map that's made using the Cave tileset.

This is a problem, since a lot of my Victory Road ideas revolved around Strength puzzles.

Personally, I like the look green and dark green version from before.
Although, not every starter had designs that screamed "I'm this type" like what you're suggesting. As an example, Torchic looked like a generic chicken, but it's still identifiable as a fire type.
It's a basic evolution, the traits ain't all there yet.

I would have thought if there was going to be a Tazzie Devil it would be a fire starter if anything. Koala is usually the way people go for an Australian grass starter, but I think there's a split one with a drop bear there somewhere (though why not have the grass koala evolve into a scary drop bear?).

The way I saw it was that the Tazzie and the Thorny get their base typing from their real-life counterpart's habitat, the Tazzies living in the Underbrush, and the Thornies in the desert, where it's rather hot.

Plus as a bit of theming, a suggestion of where Tasleaf actually has its plant parts so it can better ambush prey has been made.

The pond is missing a lot of pieces, namely the edges that run along the bottoms and your corners. The 'gems' don't even fit with the Pokemon style, either.

Well, the last fire lizard starter we go was charmander. Reptiles are pretty much always the grass starter, if there is a reptile among the starter trio at all. Thorndle seems more interesting as a fire type, as his design makes me think of a more defensive mon overall.
As for Tasleaf's defense, I bring up the Torchic thing again. It doesn't have to yell "Hey I'm this type" Immediately. These are the basic stages of the starters. There is a lot of room to grow into what they're supposed to be like.

As far as the platypus goes, I do believe that there actually is a Platypus already in the Dex as a Grass Poison type (for some strange reason)

Yes, that dex which isn't even a real dex at the moment, it's just to get people talking about things. And those starters, none of which are one of the four you will find in every other "oh so original and genius Australian region" (kangaroo, frill-neck lizard, koala, platypus).

It's a work in progress of only a few days, I don't know how people forget that. Things are hardly set in stone at all. These are discussion threads for a reason, to discuss.

Alright, so now that Victory Road 1F is done for now, here's Victory Road 2F.

Note the strength puzzle on the left, which drops the boulder down to where you need it on 1F. Also note the mini-puzzle on the right side. Those two branches are both supposed to have an item at the end (again, this tileset not only lacks proper strength-boulders, it also lacks item balls) - this is a callback to the strength bit in Gen 1's Victory Road, where trying to get one item would block the other off. I thought that to be rather trolltastic, so I've thrown it in.

The ladder at the top and bottom both link to corresponding ladders on 1F. The ladder in the middle leads to the "summit" of Victory Road.

I think we're being pretty productive - but ahead of ourselves. It's like we're working on a houses's roof when the house isn't even finished. We're working on everything at once - the pokedex and pokemon in it, music, sprites, game maps, tile set - it's pretty unorganised compared to other fan projects!

We have a series of tasks which need to be completed in order to create the game. However, some of these tasks depend on other tasks, while others are completely independent. Listening over most of the music written so far, there are two major flaws I noticed; Lack of capturing ideas, and a lack of melodic development. Not bashing on Sion here, but there's just a lack of real structure in his music. whenever there is something there it's very little, very basic. It doesn't have a "real" melody in the sense that it isn't cohesive, it isn't definitive. You can't really tell when a melodic line is going to end the first time listening through these songs, and that's something that just needs to be fixed, since music is such a huge factor on these games.

I say - let's change/tweak the current story ideas to focus more on dream time themes. In my idea we have a rogue someone who wants to use the deathly cries of the minka bird to abolish humans who are too into technology (by broadcasting the Minka bird's cries through television, computers, radio, phones (or the region equivalent), e.t.c) rather than current affairs as well as the current state of the world (the environment, Pokemon on the brink of extinction, pollution, e.t.c).

There is also an "evil" team who's goals are to stop the rogue from using the Minka bird by summoning the Rainbow Serpent (however the player doesn't find out this until near the end if the plot, after the "evil" team mess up when summoning the Rainbow Serpent). They also intend to "save" everyone by using the Rainbow Serpent's abilities to bring people into the dreaming/dreamtime so everyone can start a fresh. No one believes the "evil" team when it comes to the rogue's ideals to use the Minka bird because they assume they're evil (similar to team Flare and Galactic) by the way they look. The "evil" team also fund the professor's work.

The rogue acts like a seconds rival throughout the game. You meet him several times - the first being he show's you how to catch a Pokemon and the last time you see/battle him is when he's about to use the Minka bird's powers.

The professor is investigating/discovering what powers the mysterious dream stones can do as well as what secrets they hold. People initially thought that the dreamstones are filled with the Rainbow Serpent's energy from when it created the world(?)/region(?) - but it's just a myth. She is also researching dreatime/the dreaming. A strange, other worldly place that people believe is either a parallel to the current world or located in between the empty spaces of our world - not much is known about it.

For a rival... For a normal rival... How about, they've just moved into the starting town from the game's equivalent of of New Zealand, he, like most rivals chooses the starter that is super effective against yours (Oor he could get another Pokemon as a starter from their mother - like a normal,fairy or dragon type OR he could recieve a non starter Pokemon who's super effective against your starter just to switch things up a bit). I was thinking his/her personality could be somewhere in the middle between Blue and Barry - competitive, determined, a braggart, but not too hyperactive or too much of a douche. They could also like to talk about their home in Post game New Zealand area a lot. You meet him/her several times throughout your journey.

After initially meeting her in her lab, the player runs into her occasionally throughout the course of the story as one of their friendly rivals. She will teach you about certain Pokemon and certain areas when you run into her, and then battle you to test your growth.

And then after all is said and done, she shows up as the champion with a much stronger team (all differnt from what you've already experienced except maybe one or two signature pokemon)- with the justification that "these were my husbands pokemon. We research and battle in his memory."

Anyway, this demonstrates one thing - we really need a tileset which has snow in it. Or at least some icy rocks or something. The top of this mountain is looking awfully bare without it.

At least it's set up such that you can't see the front base of the mountain from the summit, and you can't see the summit from the front base. So it should look ridiculously large ingame.

This is an attempt to create a Victory Road. The bottom is where you enter, and the top is where you exit through to the Pokemon League.

Three purposes. One, it's awesome. Two, there could be some trainers or an item up there. Or maybe a special event.

I will decorate soon, once I take another look at the world map and figure out how to shape the landscape. The trees around the top are really just a placeholder.

I suggest we learn from gen vps mistakes in regards to story writing. Having a million people playing playwright will make it impossible to keep things organized and will make it so that everyone knows the story of the game ahead of time.

I suggest we choose a team of writers who will work together in their own personal writing bubble that has limited outside interference, that comes here to poll us on certain elements.

Not only will this allow for a much simpler time writing the story, but will allow those of us non writers to be surprised by the story when we finally play it

Shit, if I had my tablet I'd try and whip up a basic idea. I can't really think of any distinguishing characteristics for them, though.

Whether you like forums or not, they're gonna be the most organized place to discuss and finalize things.

/vp/ is great for collecting ideas, but not super fantastic for refining them and having them stick. We've had some wonderful ideas that were even drawn out and colored that have already been forgotten about due to the nature of how threads work here.

Deep Hibernation: Maximizes Defense, minimizes Speed when asleep

So if you're fighting a physical attacker, you can use Rest, and you'll turn from a glass cannon into a wall. This can force the enemy to switch to a special attacker, or waste two turns.

Wouldn't have much offensive capacity as a wall, though. Unless it had Sleep Talk or Snore...

As for how the forme changes, have it happen the same way Darmanitan's is handled.

Level-up moveset would probably be something like:

Start: Rest

9:Quick Attack

22: Ice Ball
29: Metal Claw
36: Sleep Talk
43: Ice Shard
50: Avalanche
