Kalos, and the story of X/Y are about having fun with pokemon and your trip. In fact, the only one really interested in competition the whole time is Serena, and this is definitely something frowned upon in X/Y, storywise.
It isn't about being special, or being better. It's about being friends with people and doing what you love.
It's pretty obvious that Pokemon training is not Diantha's whole life. Neither does it seem to be the entire existence of others. All the gym leaders had their own shit going on, and it seemed more like the fact that they were gym leaders was entirely incidental, that they just happened to be better at it than others.
It's actually a kind of nice theme, considering the focus on the online social media aspects this time around.
Wait for X2/Y2 if we get it for things to change.
