We've had some really excellent ideas fleshed out here but forgotten about due to the nature of how 4chan works. The kingfishers of the first few threads have been completely forgotten, for example. We need discussion on both the region name and the game name itself.

Poll for the region name linked a few posts up.

Discussion for the game name is limited on the forums. So far we've seen: "Pokemon Ochre" and "Pokemon Eden"

I would prefer a color-based name myself. Ochre sounds off but fits well for Australia.

So I decided to try my hand at making a grass tile suitable for use on desert routes, based off of inland spinifex.

I thought about how to make it without making it too similar to the one-tile yellow tree, and then I remembered something about the Generation 1 and 2 games.

In those games, a single grass tile was taken up by four tiny tufts of grass, instead of one bigger one. With this idea in mind, I decided to take a similar approach to making my desert grass tile.

What if the Shrimpmon had a "Chef" counter part? Maybe make the Shrimpmon Water -> Water / Fire and the "Chef"mon Fire -> Fire / Electric? The "Chef" mon could get a semi-signature move called "Boil" that does SE damage against Water-types.

So, here's shitty art for brawnbeque, the actual Water/Fire shrimp. By the original idea, Pranxious evolves when exposed to extreme heat (ie. grilling, but they also use underwater vents in dire times). These guys defend schools of Pranxious from flamingo chefs and fishing vessels, both capsizing and starting deck fires. The red lines are usually black, but they glow like charcoal when it gets mad, and the claw should be bigger but fuck mspaint.

Personally, I liked the idea of the Fire/Poison thorny devil quite a bit.
I'd enjoy if there was a kangaroo mon somewhere in the Dex, but not as a starter. It'd feel a tad shoehorned.

Now, I've actually had this before. The reason I like Thorndle as Fire/Poison is because of a few things.
One, because Fire/Poison is extremely unique, as I've never actually seen the idea done before, even in other Fakemon projects.
Two, because Thorny devils live in the desert, where it's extremely hot.
Three, beyond the pattern of Grass starters bein reptiles (barring Chespin of course), I just don't see much of a reason for him to be grass.

You are free to counter argue this, and I will gladly support him being grass if there is a good enough reasoning and design idea behind it.

If people are really adamant about it they don't HAVE to go.

To be honest, the Tasmanian Devil, while looking pretty rad, doesn't seem to be able to go in a starter direction. What we have so far makes a really fantastic 2 stager, whether we keep it Grass / Dark or make it Electric / Dark.

The Devil Fish was pretty bad, the only reason why people liked it is because of the "Devil Starters"

You seem to be missing the point entirely. It's not about wanting iconic animals for starters. It's about not wanting these two particular starters (Tasmanian Devil and Devil Fish.) Aside from a themed trio being against pattern, those two don't fit any sort of style amongst all starters when looked at as a whole. There are better options.

The Tasmanian Devil can still be used somewhere else in the dex. The Devilfish can be but I wouldn't, personally. A turtlefrog would fit in standards and would look like a proper starter if drawn right. The platypus shouldn't be brushed off simply because it's iconic, that's fucking narrowminded as fuck.

that absolutely IS an excuse. the starters define a region. they're the ones that follow the trainer from the beginning to the elite 4 and are never boxed. they need to follow a certain style. and the options that people are pushing for here fit elsewhere in the dex much better than they do as starters. we're closing ourselves off to great ideas and better uses of the ideas we've had by trying to keep the suggestion at hand.

I like the right side for Thorndle. The lazy lizard looks great, plus the blown-glass tail is a very nice touch.
I would like to eventually see the back view before we do anything with the front spikes.
I can see where people would liken them to bug-wings, kinda, but I feel as though the larger spikes are supposed to be like the second-head spikes that TDs normally have.

Grass is the desert is unheard of, its just nowhere near has course. Its thin and brittle, usually more worn in color.

Thank you. That's the map for the town on the map immediately north of Brisbane. It's based off of the Wide-Bay Burnett region in general, and Maryborough in particular.

The Pokemon lab there is actually just a placeholder. I was really thinking of putting something more like a museum there, but there were no appropriate buildings in the tileset.

You need to check your tile usage here as well. The layout is looking nice so far, but there are a few things you need to scope out, mostly related to shadows.

1: Notice on the river you've got shadows coming from both left and right sides of the riverbed. The sun doesn't quite work like that, and I doubt the grass doubles as a lightsource. It also wouldn't hurt to widen the river by a tile or two, it looks really jagged at the moment.

2: The beach. Its been a long time since I've played FR/LG, but beaches don't leave shadows, its a clean transition. I'm pretty sure they made a tile specifically for that, so check around if want.

Of course this is all for final drafts sake, if you're just playing with layouts at the moment then that's my bad.

I used yours to help me out on the body. I stripped some of the armour off, but I think that helps make it look more like a middle evolution. We can bust out the big armour for the final.

You know what would be cool? A beach strand north of Sydney as a 'route'. You could even switch it up a bit and have some sand dunes that allow you to encounter pokemon (like the desert in Hoenn).

I think the current plan was to make the space between Sydney and Brisbane one continuous beach route, meant to represent the NSW/QLD border beaches in general, and Gold Coast/Tweed Heads in particular. The idea of having Pokemon encounters in beach-sand is a new one, though. Will have to ask Bigro if that's possible to code.

Thank you. You wouldn't happen to be familiar with Sydney, would you? I'm looking at maps, but I can't seem to see too many interesting things north of Sydney Harbour. All the super-tall buildings and unique bits of architecture are on the southern end. So yeah, if you could give me an idea of what to throw onto the northern end of the town, that'd be great.

Look who's back!

I've finished spriting all 4 forms of the Lyrebirds. Currently working on spriting the Kingfishers from the earlier threads and the Lyrebird's Rainbow Pitta pre evo forms. I might do some of the starter concepts as well.

The only Lyrebird's sprite I'm not too keen on is the cloudy one (top left)...

Any thoughts? Opinions? Any suggestions of what I should do a sprite/mock up concept on?

I made a rough second stage for Thorndle. It's a little under designed on his side, not sure what to do, but I tried to make him flat.
Glass armor is a sort of cool idea, but all the art you guys are making is turning me away from it.

You can keep calling it a lyre bird but it's not. It doesn't have the lyre tail, or doesn't address the fact the lyre bird is chatot on crack. What you have is a bird of paradise or any other bird with big, distinguishable tail feathers.

Also, what I mean by making PokeAus nothing like "Pokemon: Midnite Waltz" is rather than making a "zomg so mature and adult" game with sexual references (in character design too: let's not have overly ginormous tits for girls and manly muscles with scars 'n cuts for boys), blood (furthermore, unnecessary darknessor 4chan's favorite description word: edginess), deviantart tier OCs (tacky looking, overdesigned characters with quirks such as being trans for no reason - you don't need to appeal to the retarded tumblr crowd that want muh equality in everything, generic animu looks and really awful backstories) , Pokemon that look overdesigned or like digimon we keep things more traditional - similar to the actual Pokemon games - vibrant colors, simplistic Pokemon designs, characters that have a personality but don't tread into overly darkand edgy territory with unique but not designs with too much going on, things are kept on the safe side - you don't need to make something "mature and adult!1! Hyper realistic blood, darker colors" with little to no in order to have a good enjoyable plot

Do we have anyone else to do them though? I'm pretty sure we could find other map makers to help out but for now, it's just SEQguy and Bigro as far as I'm concerned. The most I can do is make sprites/edit tile sets so I certainly can't do anything map related. If anyone wants to make edits/contribute with map making, that's pretty fine and well.

Why are HMs still a thing? There's going to be a strength puzzle in Victory Road!?

I understand where both sides are coming from, t be honest. While your idea sounds very interesting, most people don't want massive changes to the forumla - they just want an Australian themed game with all the trimmings. I think if you try to switch things up too much, you'll end up spending all your time plotting, instead of whacking a game together.

I do think your idea could be incorporated in part though. I like the idea of tracking down a Gym Leader that prefers being in the wild instead of staying in his Gym all day. Or having to 'prove yourself' to a Gym Leader by retrieving something from a cave or underwater place...

Something like this would work best. Gyms are an institution, we can't jut drop them. Without gyms there's no pokemon league or an extremely different one. Though interesting, it's meddling with core mechanics that are too central.

Though we can let the protag battle through a gym only to realize that the gym leader is never around.

The point is that an outdoor gym is still a gym. Having you chace after a gym leader defeats the purpose of a gym. Having a liberal definition of gyms is fine, but ridding them in favour of just having gym leaders about is what I'm opposed to. Probably not what was said though.

Well as a Gym it would still have to be some kind of specialised building or area. I wouldn't mind seeing a couple of the 'rural' Gyms have a unique flavour, but obviously places like Sydney would have regular Gyms in keeping with the metropolitan feel.

The reason people want the regular setup is that it's easier - you can build a city, pop a Gym somewhere and you're done. If you start designing things too intricately, you'll end up with only a handful of viable maps and the whole thing gets abandoned.

I'd rather a completed 'vanilla' game than a cool uncompleted one.

Alright, here's what you need to do. Go here, and download the trial version of RPG Maker XP.

Then, you'll want to download this, and extract it to your Desktop.

Then (this is the important part) when you've extracted that folder to wherever you're putting it, you'll need to rename it to get rid of the é in the folder name. RPG Maker can't handle retrieving files from pathnames which involve non-ASCII characters.

Anyway, now that you've downloaded the two things, open up RPG Maker XP, then click on File ==> Open Project and find your Pokemon Essentials folder. Once you find the folder, you want to double-click the file named Game.rxproj.

You're now editing maps.

Now, to make a new map to work on, you'll want to right-click on the list of map names down the bottom-left, and click "New Map". You can set the dimensions of the map, as well as the tileset.

One last thing. Be careful with layers. Pokemon Essentials and RPG Maker XP allow for the use of a maximum of 3 layers.

Serious? I think it looks fine. Colour is a bit off but other than that it's quite solid and looks like it has potential. Face also has a lot of personality which is a big plus.

My problem with this redraw is that it doesn't look like it's going anywhere. It doesn't even really look like a thorny devil.

I'm really not seeing the Digimon aspect myself. Looks like a Pokemon to me. If anything the other one looks like a digimon. Those legs are just so bizarre.

Okay, I think that's pretty much it for the layout. Just need to fix up any layering goofs and put the finishes on the coastlines and such.
