All attacks are split into Physical or Special, determining which Attack stat is used in dealing damage.
Other than that, there's now Fairy-type (which is immune to Dragon) and Mega-Evolutions (Basically Super-Saiyan formes of Pokemon obtained through a held item that expire when battle ends).
Those are really the MAJOR changes, the rest you'l figure out. For the most part you'll like the Pokemon that are new to you, but I warn you; there will be MANY new Pokemon that you can't fucking stand. Just ignore em, use em for EXP fodder and play the game your way.
The only other piece of advice I have is that the battle community is all dicked up now.
It's nothing like Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, everybody copy/pastes the first six nasty 'mons they find under a Google search and proceeds to rape holes.
If you're gonna play competitively, play among real life friends. If that's not an option, Pokemon Showdown. Just don't use the online 3v3s, they're garbage garbage garbage garbage garbage garbage garbage garbage
