It needs to be a term used for all 50+ items in that item class, and there is no broad English term that CAN be used for both fruit and berries like that.
In this episode, it's not referring to the berries from the games, it's just referring to some random apples. Apples can be referred to as "ki no mi" without any problem, and that's what they did... but the dub translating that as "berries" is just outright wrong.
And they've translated it correctly as "fruit" in other episodes.
