Alright, the little layering goofs have been fixed, and the coastlines have been done up nicely.

Sydney is done for the time being, unless someone else has any recommendations.

If not, which city should I map up next?

With respect to the possible pokedex outline, I'd like to requst to the anon (or anyone) who said he'd be around this weekend some concept art of a golden-backed tree rat inspired very rare exp. dealer. Some small and golden single stage with perhaps a neat 'gold piece from meteorite' concept?

Also what happend to the pollution fish and the transparent dead fish? I prefer both of those over the knife sharks.

I didn't construct that Pokedex outline/template, but I get where you're coming from.

Fortunately, though, the template at this stage is extremely malleable. New suggestions and concepts are welcome.

Consider the water starters - the final stage of all water starters between Gens 1 and 4 were bipedal. But Oshawott's final evolution was quadrupedal.

No, old Pokemon will not make up the majority of the Pokemon in the region. There's 100 new Pokemon, and I think about 40-70 old Pokemon. Most of the old Pokemon will either be representative of sea life, or representative of invasive species in Australia.

I know there are a few fire-less starters, but it's not done too often and I think fire should only be added if it at all helps the concept. Which for most of our suggestions isn't the case.
Though I like the blown glass visual somebody spotted in it.

Keeping it biped would be an acceptable change to pattern, imo. We've had fast water types, fast grass types, fast fire times, strong water types, strong grass, types, strong fire types, bulky grass types, bulky water types... but no bulky fire types.

Looking back at Sinnoh, the most disappointing thing is the fact the pokemon you see everywhere (ex: Zubat line, Machop line, Geodude line) were recycled from past generations and that made running into these guys constantly annoying. We should work on our own 'version' of sorts, take the same concept (ex: generic bat, basic Fighting type, basic Rock type) and put a Nullos twist on it. Not everything needs a dual typing.

It was. Early maps showed the Australian Alps as a snow area too. I made Victory Road grassy in one of my earlier maps, though, but that was only because I didn't have snowy tiles on hand.

Here we go. It's mostly the southern and western parts of Tas which are frozen. Also note the trail of ice through the Australian Alps, near where Victory Road/Kosciusko is.

I concur. However, I think there needs to be a little more variation between the colors. If you look at all starters and their evolutionary lines, they never share the same exact color scheme and have varying levels of saturation.

Hi, from gen/vp/ here, I really like this design.
But I can't help but feel that your middle evo design seems to pick up traits then lose them upon evolving again.
Mainly the spikes around the legs, the "cat-like" ear, the shape of the face, and the overall colour shift.

I know I'm a little late with my response here, but there aren't two lighthouses in that map.

There's one lighthouse, on the cape. And the other tower is Sydney Tower, which is an observation tower, not a lighthouse. It's also one of the tallest buildings in the southern hemisphere.

Prioritise, man.

Pokemon design is a very gradual process of taking an initial concept and developing an initial image of it. Then refining and developing the concept and image into something amazing. Like cutting and polishing a gemstone.

We've had plenty of threads filled with Pokemon, anyway. The aftermath of this can be seen in the Dropbox. Right now, we're taking a break from Pokemon design to work on the region itself. And you can design a region and its Pokemon mostly independently from one-another.

Also conerning the fire implementation, why notmake the tips of its horns glowing from the heat? Scorching thorns sound like a great way of defence and it hasn't been done yet.

Thank you. The island, the ship, the building, etc. are all meant to represent Cockatoo Island shipyard. It's an old naval shipyard that used to churn out warships.

Anyway, I've started work on Brisbane now. So far, the structures represent:

Power station with smokestacks removed = Brisbane Powerhouse
Skyscraper = Infinity Tower
Pokemon Center = Princess Alexandra Hospital
Rearranged Pewter Museum = The University of Queensland

And the Poke Mart is roughly close to the main shopping hub of Brisbane.

The Brisbane map is quite a bit shorter than the Sydney Map, but it is wider. This is because I'm showing off a more inland section of Brisbane (following the Brisbane River west-to-east), while with Sydney I was showing off an area much closer to the coast (resulting in having to depict the main variation between north and south).

Yeah, sorry about that. Couldn't squeeze it in between the high-density residential buildings, the Silph Co. Opera House and the subtle reference to Home and Away.

There's also the fact that there's normally only one department store per region, and since Adelaide is lacking in landmarks, I was considering giving it to them instead as a space-filler once I got around to mapping it.

Brisbane will be taking the place of the city immediately north of Sydney. The city in the far north of Queensland, where you get the 8th badge, is Cairns. Between them is a town representing the Wide Bay-Burnett region (pic related).

Still, you do have a point. I think I'll downsize Brisbane to 50x35. Big enough to include some fun landmarks, but small enough that it won't result in big-city fatigue.

I'd love it to be fire/poison - great typing! Has a pretty good selection of resistances (only 1/4 damage done by Grass, Bug and Fairy attacks. 1/2 damage done by Fire, Ice, Fighting, Poison and Steel ) and 3 weaknesses (Ground would be a huge threat towards it)

Agreed. It fits in with the Australia theme nicely, it isn't something overly generic (Look, a Kangaroo/Platypus/Koala - AUSTRALIA!), has a nice color scheme and it (to me anyway) looks like it would fit right at home with the canon starters.

Now, if we could make the final evo fire/poison, it would be perfect

True, true. I think we're making nice paced progress at the moment. With gen/vp/, I don't like how people are going on to say the two projects are "enemies" or "rivals" - they're two separate projects and the way I see it, as long as we don't have any Pokemon, map areas or plot/story looking too much like gen/vp/, no trouble will arise. I'd love both projects to be completed at one point or another - two great projects to play (both made as a huge community efforet). The only thing I hope the two projects DON'T end up becoming, is ANYTHING like Pokemon Midnite Waltz/ Pokemon black and white 3 http://archive.foolz.us/vp/thread/16312528 - everything is terrible

Personally, I really liked the blown glass scorpion tail Thorndle had from that one draw friend. It'd different than fire, and it evokes the poison typing while still signifying heat from the fire type.

You're using Essentials, amirite? The Outside tileset for this map, yes?

Ok, scroll down the tiles and look for the weird rock structure. It's the Onix tail thing from Sevii. Near that, there's four strips of terrain. Grass/Sand etc. Each one has a little ridge at the top of the tiles. That ridge matches the bit going around water.

Fucking find it and fix your maps. Jesus fuck.

I agree, it's pretty unique (and it makes sense by the explanation given) but as I said, why not something stronger? Glass is really easy to smash? Maybe a dex entry should be something like "When the glass armor on its back becomes shattered, it become enraged and releases toxic fumes" (if we go with fire/poison we really should go with fire/poison ?

It might be interesting if we sort of divided the region in half. There's a huge desert in the middle that can only be crossed by train. You can fly between the two halves of the region but can't actually walk it.

I meant non-linear in the sense of gym progression. You have to beat the gyms in order for gen /vp/. And it's not mimicking, faggot. It's using the same source. If we were mimicking we'd have a mountain that you climb down and climb back up at the end.

Everything is color coded:

Normal routes are white
Cities are red
Towns are yellow
Forest areas are green
Cave areas are brown
Water is blue
E4 is pinkish

NSW itself is a very large yet very dense State.

Most of the population lives right on the coast, so if we just make the outback a massive forest-desert-mountains-plains-quarry, it would fit in with some antagonist plot but largely would be ignored, or hated like the water in R/S/E

The project is PokeAus. Pokemon Australia version. The whole thing is the region is based on the whole of Australia. The first few threads about this thing was discussing "What if Australia was a region in Pokemon?". There have been countless discussions about where everything would go and why. To be honest, Australia as a region looks pretty fine to me >>16354377 . It would be a waste of tons of effort to suddenly change it. I'm not sure how the main people running the project will react if we've suddenly decided to change everything but think in advance - we'd have to redo maps, music, Pokemon ideas, concepts and other things. We'd be shooting ourselves in the foot and be starting at square one again.

Using all of Australia as the template for the region was decided already. There's no point rushing into a thread and trying to derail decisions that were already made - it'll stall the project and you'll end up with Pokemon Sage levels of procrastination while you wallow in the 'development stage'.

Remember - the map is loosely based on Australia. At the end of the day, it's just a template to aid the creation of the game. There's no need to nitpick over map inspirations - we should just focus on the important stuff like... I dunno... making an actual game.

I know people are pushing for glass parts, but I'm not overly keen on that idea. I really like the Fire/Poison idea, and would prefer if >>16357131 had a few spikes added to its design to convey the 'thorny devil' idea while alluding to poisonous spikes.

I feel like the styracosaurus (or should that be straya-cosaurus?) would be perfect. Similar enough to evolve from the thorny lizard, but different enough to give the final form a wow factor.

It was originally fire/poison, not fire/ground.
it was Fire/Poison Thorny Devil, Grass/Dark Tasmanian devil, and water/psychic Devil Fish. That was where this concept came from. And while it is based on the Thorny Devil which is not poisonous, it still fits. stop trying to force ground onto it.

When considering typing though, I like factoring in two things - if it's been done before and if the type combination is good. Problem is, people aren't giving proper reasons for why each type would work better. It's just "it's better because I and some others said so (plus, it's more realistic)".

The argument is really flimsy, especially when you compare it with some of the starter Pokemon final evos Gamefreak have come up with.

Took me a while to pin down a design I really liked, but I came up with this. I took inspiration from the Styracosaurus, of course. I made the ear-like appendages into the frill, gave it a few more spikes, and gave it more bulky legs.

Personally, I'd rather see the normal thorny devil's neck bulge rather than just a triceratops frill.

You can't see it in this picture, but I compromised a bit.

Being very bulky and spiny, as you can see, what in the world would he need to protect?

The answer: His neck bulge. It's very fragile, but from behind the defenses of his neck frill, he can spew flames/smoke/poisonous gases from the bulge.

I also gave him the glass tail, as you can see, along with an overall bulkier body, and made the spike placement more reminiscent of his previous form.

Well, what would you use?

The glass is a rather decent idea in that it's unique, fits the fire theme in a different way than just being on fire, and it fits the fact that it's a desert creature.

You've done it in my opinion anyway . This is probably the best looking thorny devil final evo I've seen. The bulge spewing flames is pretty cool (and it actually looks like it belongs in the evo line). Maybe less spikes up the tail though, would look "over designed" with too many.

Where does the bulge come from from 2nd to 3rd form? Isn't that the kind of feature you'd want across all three mons, like Bulbasaurs bulb?

I'm near certain we were aiming for bulky, this looks too slim and quick.

Blastoises cannons are one example that doesn't represent the majority of all starters... I feel like a bulge like that is something you'd want across all three. It's a pretty defining feature.

Bulky does imply slow though, and this thing looks fast as fuck

In other news, I've continued work on Brisbane (I've also finished the coasts before fully completing the layout, since >>16353195
has sand in his vagina about it), but I've hit a problem.

Firstly, I wanted to put the Wheel of Brisbane roughly where the Poke Mart is currently, but there's no tiles I can see which could function as a decent placeholder.

Other than that, what do you guys think of the layout so far? It's still a work in progress.

Greninja's tongue scarf is made of the tongue that was always in it's mouth.

Blaziken doesn't gain features, it just looks different entirely.

Meganium loses a feature, doesn't gain any.

Samurotts shell helmet developed from it's scalchops. It's odd, but it came from somewhere.

Infernape's gold plates, although seemingly random, come from Monferno's gold rings.

All you gotta do is add a bit of the bulge to the previous to forms and it works.

The bulge is something that just spouts of it's neck.

You're misinterpreting me. I LOVE the new design as well, I just don't see it as fitting the bulky-fire type we wanted. All it needs is a few adjustments to itself and across it's line.

It's not really about following patterns, it's about looking like it fits along the line and fitting the characteristics we discussed. This new feature doesn't seem to fit across the line (fixable by adding to the previous lines in some form) and doesn't fit the characteristics we discussed (it's not bulky in any definition of the word, fixable by giving it some weight and/or thickness.)

I have some pretty lame news, in my haste to upload the last picture, I closed Sai so I've lost the original file. This means I'll have to draw on the lower res picture here if we want to mod it, so it may look a little pixel-y from now on.
